PharmD to (+) YourPace BA in Political Science - Difficulty? Transfer credit? Minor?
#1
Hi everyone. *skip to the asterisks to avoid pointless background information Smile

I have rotations/APPEs left to complete my Doctor of Pharmacy degree, but I skipped from an Associate in science all the way to a PharmD (with pre-requisites in between). I chose Pharmacy because I have two children with autism and now also have one child with Type 1 Diabetes. I knew I needed access to a stable career that pays very well.

Now that I'm almost done, I'd also like to get a degree in a field I am truly passionate about so I have other opportunities available to me in the future. I have probably 170+ credit hours and I'm wondering if it's truly easy to get the maximum (90 hours) transferred in for the degree.

I am hoping to complete the degree in one 8 week span and yes I know I "shouldn't" depend on that. I'm not depending on it, but I am hopefully and usually accomplish what I set my mind to. I have recently become fascinated by politics. I started the saylor academy course today to get a feel for political science and I think I can test out tomorrow because I've breezed right through it, but truly enjoyed every second of it.

***I would appreciate any guidance and information so please share your experience with:

* transferring in ACE/Community College/4-year credit hours
* YourPace: Is it difficult? What do the requirements per course consist of? Can you skip ahead if you're already familiar with a topic? Are there practice assessments/exams to see where you stand?
* BA in Political Science: What are the most difficult classes? Are there core or electives besides GEC that I can transfer in?
* Minors: Can anyone add a minor to their degree, even if they're using "YourPace"?
* Anything you feel is substantial or helpful Smile

Thank you in advance!

Honestly a management degree would pair well with a PharmD! That's an awesome degree! I would recommend applying to UMPI with what you have currently, and get an evaluation. From there, we can help you fill in gaps.

Why a BA in Poli Sci? There are other degrees that would relate better to a PharmD such as management like ashkir said. I would apply to UMPI and see what courses they say you'll still need then we can fill in what you have remaining. You must complete 30 credits - 10 courses - at UMPI. I would plan for 2 8 week sessions. Very few have done it in 1 especially with having children.

Considering where you are in your education already, I would stick with your passion and pursue the BA in History & Political Science at UMPI.  Sure, business and management may be helpful long term,but you could always later go for an MBA later to cover that (WGU, HAU, etc - plenty of low cost options for that)

Verity, did you do your pre-requisites at a 4-year college/university? If so, how many credits did you do there?

Not actually looking for an answer, but I ask because some schools will let you transfer credits “down” from a professional school. My father (dentist) and aunt (optometrist) both did this. You may have all that you need for a bachelor’s already, would probably be in biology, chemistry, or something similar.

With probably 170+ credit hours, you may want to see if these are semester credits or quarter credits. UMPI is a great choice if you can complete it in two/three terms, but by the time you finish the degree, it'll be close to Excelsior/TESU in cost, ease, speed as for Excelsior/TESU, you can transfer in 113/114 credits vs 90.
