Penn Foster Business/Accounting Courses review
#1
I just finished my first Penn Foster class, so I thought I'd start a thread where I can post my review about the courses so that it's all contained in one place. I plan on taking 5 Penn Foster classes total.

ACC 112 - Managerial Accounting
Final Grade - 96 (A)

>> The time requirement for this course is a maximum of 3 months. When I was on the phone signing up, they said it doesn't take that long with most people completing their courses within several weeks. I took about 5 weeks to complete, mostly because I was waiting on my textbooks and then my final exam grade.

>> Signing up is a fairly simple process. Call 1-800-238-9554 and tell them you want to sign up for one of their individual courses. It's helpful to have the course number handy to make sure they're signing you up for the right class. The cost for the first class s $235 ($70/credit ($210), $15 for materials, and $10 transcript fee) and every class after that is only $225 since they don't charge you the transcript fee every time. I just paid over the phone, so I don't know if they offer any other types of payment or not, but they did ask me if I wanted to pay in full or make payments.

>> Once you sign up, you should get an email with information about logging into the student portal. If not, just call and have them send it again (that's what I had to do). You'll have to create a username and password. Once you've signed in, you can access your courses, exams, and study guides. They also have videos in the Help Center on the common questions people have.

>> The textbook that you need is included with your course. They ship it out within 24 hours from when you sign up. It took about 4 days for the book to get here (OH), but I didn't sign up till a Friday so it was delayed over the weekend.

>> There are online/pdf study guides that you will access through the student portal. These study guides summarize the chapters and give you the textbook page numbers to read. They also spell out which practice problems and exercises to complete. Each chapter also has a Self-Check (with answers) at the end which is included in the study guide. The study guides are basically your plan for completing the course.

>> There are 4 lessons in this course. The first 3 lessons are 4 chapters each and the last lesson is 6 chapters. You will complete the entire textbook during this course.

>> There are 4 exams - one at the end of each lesson. They are 20 questions, essentially untimed, and multiple choice. They tell you that you are allowed 60 minutes PER question. The nice thing is you can preview a pdf version of the test so you can solve the problems and then input all your answers at once. The exams are all open book.

>> The final exam is also 20 questions with each question worth 5 points. It is also untimed and it is NOT multiple choice. You access the pdf version of the exam and work out the problems, but you have to create a word-processing document with your answers and work. This document is what you submit (upload) for the final exam. An instructor will grade it and then give you a grade. It took about 6 days for my exam grade to come back and I got an 88 on the final.

>> You are allowed one retake per exam. After your lesson exams, they will show you which problems you got wrong. You then have one chance to take it again. When I was taking my exams, I wrote down my answers to all the questions and then when I was doing the retake I didn't have to solve all the problems again. You are also allowed one retake on the final exam, but they will not give you your graded exam back for review before you attempt the retake.

>> The exams were not too difficult. They had several knowledge problems (things you read in the textbook), several application problems where you solve a given problem, and several questions where you had to apply what you read (a principle) to a problem. I did notice several self-check questions ended up on the exams.

>> Be sure to use Microsoft Word when submitting your final exam. I had used a different word processor and they sent back my exam saying they couldn't open it. :o

>> Once you've completed the course and got your final grade back, you need to be sure to add it to your ACE transcript, especially if you're sending it to one of the Big 3.

>> You can sign up for your next course before you are finished with the course you're working on. Just an FYI!

>> They have a contact button in your student portal where you can email the instructor. They were very quick to respond to my questions and pretty helpful!

>> As far as the actual course, I didn't find it too hard. It combined stuff I had learned from studying for the Prin. of Financial Accounting CLEP and the Principles of Finance DSST, so if you need those courses, you may want to take them first. Besides, the recommended pre-req for this course is Financial Accounting. There is quite a bit of reading. Each chapter is ~30-50 pages in length.

Well, I can't think of much else. If I think of anything, I'll add it. Let me know if you have questions or post them here. Smile

Well, I realized that I'm behind in posting about my Penn Foster classes so now I'll get caught up. The courses are all pretty similar in format so I'm just going to post things that are different about each class.

ACC 201 - Intermediate Accounting I

Final Grade - 98 (A)

>> This course took me about 5 weeks as well.

>> You will only use 1/2 (11 chapters) of the textbook for this course. The second 1/2 is used in Intermediate Accounting II.

>> There were 4 lesson exams and final exam/project.

>> Final Exam was once again a word document uploaded and then graded by the instructor. It was broken into two parts (A and B) and had a total of 13 questions worth different points. I did really well on this exam and ended up with a 97. The first time I submitted it they sent it back saying I needed to show my work so be sure to show the work for ALL problems and ALL numbers that you work out.

>> I can't think of much else that was different for this course. I really enjoyed this course! Smile

ACC-202 Intermediate Accounting II

Final Grade - TBD

>> No textbook was mailed for this class since I already had it from Int. Accounting I so I was able to get started right away. I took about 5-6 weeks because with summer I was very sporadic in studying.

>> There were 4 lesson exams and one proctored final exam.

>> Since this course requires a proctored final you need to submit a proctor request form. Either call or email students services and have them email one to you. Then have your proctor fill out the top portion and sign and then you sign the bottom portion and either fax or email it back to Penn Foster. Now, normally, they are supposed to send out your final exam AFTER you have completed all the lessons and assignments, but for some reason they sent mine out after they got the request form so my proctor (same place I go for CLEP) just kept it for me.

>> You have 3 weeks from the time the proctor receives your final exam to take it. The 3 weeks does not include time spent in the mail.

>> Proctored Final exam - I just took the proctored final exam for this course today so I don't have my score. I'll update when I do. This exam is not easy. There were no essay questions. All the questions required journal entries, but you have to understand the material to figure out how to write the journal entries. The test was open-book, open-note, with a 1 hour time limit. It does require a proctor.

Good luck to all taking this course. There's not much info on it so hopefully this will help. PM me with any questions.

UPDATE: Okay, so I just got my final exam grade back and I got a 75. I'm actually very pleased with that score since I had a hard time with the final exam. I ended up with a 87 for the whole Intermediate Accounting II course!

Congratulations on doing well on the final exam. When things get tough, sometimes it makes sense, after giving it our best, to realize that we're not perfect and to accept it.

Thanks for keeping us informed about how you're progressing.

Thanks Laterbloomer for your sweet comment! And yes, it did make me upset at first that I didn't get an "A" (since I tend to be a perfectionist!!), but like my mom told me a B is still great. And it's a high B too!!

Thanks again!

Wow, awesome work Horsemaniac! I've been wondering how that proctored final went for you... It's got to help that it's now open book, considering that it's not an easy exam.

I'm finished with this class except for the final so I thought I'd post my experience before I forget anything. Smile I was going to take the final today, but some stuff came up and I didn't so I'll post about the final once I take it.

ACC 210 - Cost Accounting
Final Grade - TBD

>> This course took me about 4 weeks to complete the actual coursework, but I've been waiting for the final.

>> Once again textbook is included and will be mailed to you. It contains 10 chapters so a considerable smaller book compared to the other classes. Also, included was a workbook that included pages for each problem for each chapter. That was really nice to not have to format pages to do the homework.

>> There were 4 lesson exams, a proctored final exam and a graded project.

>> Something different with this class was the the first and third lesson exams were completed online like normal, but the second and fourth lesson exams have to be mailed in. The online ones were multiple choice, the mail-in ones were similar to a final exam - word problems.

>> Final project has to be completed before the final exam. It wasn't really a hard project. It required you to basically create a set of financial statements for a company in the scenario. All the instructions are included in the information about the final project and the project is uploaded online. One thing, though, my information about the project didn't show up until I asked the instructor about it so I think they don't give it to you until after you've completed the lessons. FYI!!

>> As with the other classes, you will need to submit a proctor request form. If you have already submitted one for a previous class and the information hasn't changed then you don't need to worry about it. Otherwise, have your proctor fill out the top portion and sign and then you sign the bottom portion and either fax or email it back to Penn Foster.

>> You have 3 weeks from the time the proctor receives your final exam to take it. The 3 weeks does not include time spent in the mail.

>> Proctored Final exam - I'll update on this after I take it. I do know it's open book and open notes and I believe it's an hour time limit and it's proctored.

>> Another thing is that it seemed for this class that it took a long time for grades to post so be sure you plan ahead if you're trying to meet a deadline. Grades take about 5-7 business days to post. They won't send the final exam to your proctor until after all grades have been posted and that takes about a week once they mail it.

This class has actually been pretty enjoyable, despite my impatience at receiving grades. Wink PM me or post here with any questions.
