Goal of obtaining BSBA in General Mgmt. in 6-9 months reasonable?
#1
Hey guys/gals,

I have been lurking around this site for about 1-2 months now and have gained a vast amount of knowledge from everyone that contributes. I greatly appreciate all your input in helping me become more educated on how, what, when to do things. Having said this, I am not one to ask for help, however I need the input from the great individuals on this site as I am struggling on my own.

I just sent my application and transcripts to Thomas Edison State College for credit evaluation. I have college credits from a 4-year university and a 2 year community college. I was enrolled in Franklin University's online BSBA degree with a start date of March 30th, 2015, however with their 40 credit hour residency, the $18.5k-$20k price tag was hard to swallow. Franklin's academic advisers gave me 7 courses to take at Straighterline that they would equate in and then I'd have the remaining 40 to complete and ETA for graduation is May, 2016.

Since finding this website I have since put on hold my Franklin choice and want to ask about TESC. I am a great self studier and exam taker. (not trying to brag just insight on myself). I am not afraid to test out via Straighterline, CLEP, DSST or TECEP tests. I will list my courses that I have currently completed along with my professional licenses that I hold in my state. Franklin University gave me around 10-15 credit hours for my licenses/certifications that I hold in my state, however I am a little concerned that TESC will not do the same. Listed below are my current credits that I have along with my licenses.

My goal is to complete my BSBA in General Management within 6-9 months. With your input and help I know that I will be able to achieve this or someone will give me realistic idea of timeframe, but I am confident that I can complete my degree in 6-9 months if I absolutely hammer it out. I have completed all my state licensing/certifications on a self-study basis with a 1-2 week study time before I took the state exam.

Current Credits:

4-year University with courses taken in 2010-2011 (yes I was on quarters)

-English 101 B 3 credits
-College Algebra B+ 3 credits
-Effective Public Speaking C+ 3 credits
-Music In Film B- 3 Credits
-Econ 102 (Macro) C- 3 credits
-Intermediate Algebra A 3 credits
-Econ 101 (Micro) C 3 credits
-Sociology 101 B- 3 credits

I have 12 other credits from the 4-year University however they were for the College of Business that I was in and they do not equate or get credit for. I have tried transferring the other 12 credit hours in to the community college I started after the 4-year University and into Franklin University and they did not give me credit for those additional 12 credit hours that I have.

2-year Community College 2013-2014 (Semesters)

US History II B+ 3 credit hours
Management and Organizational Behavior B 3 credit hours
Business Calculus B+ 5 credit hours
English 101 A 3 credit hours *quarters from 4-year did not satisfy, had to take again
Intermediate Algebra A+ 5 credit hours *quarters from 4-year did not satisfy, had to take again
Principles of Marketing Management A 3 credit hours
Sociology 101 A+ 3 credit hours *quarters from 4-year did not satisfy, had to take again

Straighterline Courses Completed:
Accounting I B 3 credit hours
US History I B 3 credit hours
Currently enrolled and will complete by 01/21/2015-- Business Stats- MAT 150 Current grade C

In my state I also hold these licenses:
*Inactive- Property & Casualty Insurance Licenses 40 hours (self-study monday-friday, took exam saturday passed)
*Inactive- Life, Health & Accident Insurance Licenses 40 hours (self-study monday-friday, took exam on monday passed)
*Active- Licensed Real Estate Appraiser Apprentice-- 78 Hours
***Additionally I have completed 150 hours of qualifying education with certifications from the Appraisal Institute for my license upgrade. I have all the certificates for every exam that I had to take along with all the real estate exams that I have passed with certificates proving I completed the courses.

I hold two other certifications in the building trade that I don't think are worth anything but will share what they are if anyone thinks they may help!

Sorry for the long post but I am a little lost! Please help! New requirements for obtaining the license I am going after in my state requires a Bachelors degree in any field from an accredited college or university.

THANK YOU!!!!

As far as I know, TESC doesn't grant credit for any licenses that have not already been reviewed by TESC. TESC only initiates assessment of any workplace/professional program upon the organization's request.

All of your credits will be accepted and you will be able to at least use them as free electives if they don't fit in your degree plan elsewhere. If you were on quarter hours, they're converted into semester hours (3 quarter hours = 2 semester hours). From where you're at right now, 6-9 months is definitely possible. I did something like 25 tests in a couple of months, and it only took that long because I was flying between the US and Hong Kong every other week. There are many degree plans on the wiki which might help: Degree Forum Wiki.

The following exams are very easy (imo) and should be fast credit:
CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Lit (6 cr)
CLEP Humanities (6 cr)
CLEP College Composition (6 cr)
CLEP Info Sys
CLEP Management
DSST Supervision
DSST Intro to Business
CPA (WA), CFA Level III Candidate

Currently pursuing: ALM, Data Science - Harvard University, Cambridge, MA (12/48, on hold for CFA/life commitments)
MBA, Finance/Accounting - Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, 2015
BSBA, General Management - Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, NJ, 2012

yes, KayV you did! I didn't know which section to post it in and results… I posted in the other one first and then after a few hours, I posted this one in the General Discussion because the general discussion has more responses and threads!! I greatly appreciate your post!! I was going to delete the other thread in the other section until I saw your post that you made! Thank you again and I asked a question in the other thread so if the moderators want to delete this one please do! I apologize for posting in both!

KayV… I posted a question in the other thread asking about the SL Financial Accounting for the degree plan… Again I greatly appreciate you mapping out the things you did! I have already been on CLEP and TESC's website for test information.

Thanks for the response I was hoping that TESC would give me credit like Franklin University did however, I kind of guessed that they wouldn't since on their licenses page of evaluated licenses, my licenses are not listed. It seems though that they may take a look at them because it says "Grouped by industry, the following professional licenses, certifications and organization's training programs have been reviewed for college credit by Thomas Edison State College." So I wonder if they may consider them. Even if they gave me a few credit hours that'd be better than nothing.

My current game plan though is to do worst case scenario, meaning TESC gives me no credit for my licenses. That way if they do happen to give me something, great, however if they do not give me credit then I already have a map made out that didn't depend on them giving me credit!
