I will definitely check Craigslist, although I'm pretty sure my mom will veto the second-hand thing. She is firmly set in the belief that no one ever sells a computer that doesn't have something wrong with it (which probably has some truth to it :p )

So, I'm buying a laptop once I earn a few more paychecks Right now I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 (4GB RAM & 500 GB hard drive) for $600. I thought I'd get some outside input on what laptops you folks like [: MUST have at least 4GB of RAM & preferably 300+ hard drive, although I'll settle for a 250 if I must.

I love my old Gateway MX7120. Bought it in 2006. It has never failed me and is running Windows 7 successfully.

I have 8 laptops and 1 HP desktop. When buying a laptop/notebook. Don't worry if you can't find one with a big enough Harddrive. You can always purchase a cheap 500GB or 1TB internal harddrive later on for less than $100. If you find a laptop that you like that only has 2 GB of memory, you can also just buy another 2 GB memory stick you can install yourself.

When shopping around, take down the names and models so you can google the specs and make sure they are upgradable to the Specs that you need. Unless you find it exactly as you described, then you don't have to worry this.

Consider posting the intended aplication of this computer, most people overpay for their computer because they get features they do not require.


4 gb or RAM is enough for even the most avid gamers. There is no purpose in general for this amount of memory aside from gaming (still not really required, just maybe it will get used) and launching spaceships. Don't be afraid of 3gb or even 2gb with windows 7. I know that people think it matters, but at some point it just doesn't. Also one can purchase a 1gb stick of RAM for about $20 so usually paying $100 extra for a computer with more RAM is usually a mistake. Also, paying more than $450 for a computer is usually a mistake, even a laptop. Remember that 5% edge you get is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Shop around, read up on your hardware. Read reviews for computers, and not so much user reviews so much as PCStats or CNET reviews.

This is of course all assuming you don't have some kind of specialized aplication for this computer, but I really think if one knows what their required specs really are they can save a ton of money. I'm in the bussiness of saving people money and have put a good bit of research into this issue. Frankly most people get confused between a computers speed due to condition and actual specs and how the two show themselves in everyday life.

I'm pretty decided on that, unless some radically better deal comes along before I get the extra money.
