Homeschooling in North Carolina
#11
Hello neighbor! We are going to go to Palomar as well!

Thank you for posting that. The one thing I have looked at is what classes are open several days/weeks after registration has started, and Calculus is always one of them! So, I am not too worried about it at this point.

Did you know that Palomar (or any of the local CC's) doesn't offer Geometry? In high school, it's a course, but not once you get to college. It seems to be part of Algebra as far as I can tell. You might have to find another way to homeschool geometry.

PM me if you're interested in looking at what we use, I can even let you see it if you'd like.

Palomar does offer Geometry (Math 55) but not every semester.
We are currently homeschooling Geometry and as long as I stay one lesson ahead then I seem to be able to help ds when he needs it.
He would prefer completing it at a faster pace (semester) if only his teacher could keep up with that! Wink

We used Khan Academy for geometry twice. You don't really need more than a month or so, and yes, it's typically part of algebra. Good luck!

Good to know about Palomar. I didn't think to check the catalog, just the classes they're teaching this semester. It wasn't on the list of all of the math classes, so I just assumed it wasn't available at all.

We will be using VideoText Geometry, and I have the first 3 modules already (bought them on Craigslist for cheap). I like that it's Geometry, Trig & Analytic Geometry all together. When he's done, he can take the Precalculus CLEP.

We are currently using VideoText Algebra (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & Algebra II together). After he finishes, I'm going to have him take the College Algebra CLEP as his "final" exam. He is very excited at the thought of getting college credit.

What I like about VideoText is that you can call and get help on the phone, having someone walk him through a problem if he's having trouble, and you can't figure it out. I may need that one of these days, as it's been 28 years since I graduated HS!

I would definitely have your son work through Khan Academy for the Geometry courses - you can watch with him, so that you can help him with his homework.

I know what it's like not being able to catch up - I thought I'd teach them Latin, but it turns out my son is fantastic at memorizing all of those declensions and vocabulary but I'm not - he's basically teaching it to himself and his sister. I have a feeling it's only going to get harder for me to keep up...

This is valuable info in this thread, you might want to start a new thread away from this one so your info becomes searchable in the main forum. Thanks.

I realized that we hijacked your thread, but I don't know how to delete our info off of this thread and move it onto a new one. Is that possible? Or do I just cut and paste and start a new thread? Sorry, this is the only forum I visit/write in, and I'm pretty clueless about how it works.
