Nook Color
#1
Hello all,

I saw a thread on here a while back stating that the IPAD was a great tool for studying for clep/dsst tests. I thought that was a terrific idea and started looking into getting myself a tablet pc so that I could use it while on the treadmill or elliptical trainer. The IPAD was a little out of my price range, and after a bit of research I discovered the Nook Color from Barnes and Noble. While officially an e-reader, it does allow internet browsing on the stock models and comes at a price tag of only $ 250.00

In addition the Nook can be "rooted" which means that you can easily tweak it so that you gain access to all of the Android functions, taking it from a reader with some internet functions, to a full function pc tablet. Rooting it was fairly simple and I now have a super responsive pc tablet that allows me to do IC study while exercising in the morning. I it very zippy for internet tasks, e-mail, watch movies etc, and it has access to the whole Android market for apps. Even if you leave it as a stock Barnes and Noble product it is still a terrific value for anyone looking to maximize their study time.

I just thought I would throw it out there for anyone who may be in the market for an IPAD, but feel it's a little too pricey. It's an alternative that has worked great for me so far and I can give it nothing but positive reviews.

Thanks for this, I am just starting out and thought that a tablet would make for easier studying. I researched several last night, but your review has me leaning toward the nook color! Thanks again.

Where do you get your study guides? Or do you simply study InstantCert/etc on it?

I have only recently started studying for CLEP and Dsst exams, but all of the materials for the four courses I have prepped for so far have been available online. DSST guides have been available through the getcollegecredit site for about 10 dollars each, and have been very helpful so far. I have also found that many of the test specific threads have links to more online information. These are mainly sites that other users have found helpful. Just "googling" the subject name has provided other useful links. I have been using it a lot for IC as well as online tests like Peterson's or Dome exam Prep. I may have to buy old fashioned texts from time to time, but I am feeling pretty confident that a lot of what I will need can be found in ebook or direct through webpages.

For the Peterson practice tests, are you using the downloaded pdf's or does the online testing work? I tried a Kindle awhile back, but the online Peterson tests didn't work. The browser couldn't handle the pop-ups correctly when signing in. Although IC worked just fine.

Elvis,

I actually didn't do Peterson's yet on the nook. My bad. It wasn't until I tried to log in this morning and found that I was having the same issues you described that I realized I had done it on my desktop over the weekend, not the nook. I imagine it's an issue with my browser settings. I will play with it and see if I can get it to work. That is the only website I have had issues with so far.

I was able to do the dome clep free practice tests with no issue. I have used IC on it, as well as browsing pdf tests and files. It's been great so far.

Good deal on your Nook Filmor. Will you be rooting it or keeping it stock?

I have never used a nook color but I'm the one who posted the thread about the iPad as my secret weapon. I am using it right now to post this message. It's perfect for reading and merely ok for writing. I can't say enough good things about it and you can get a first gen one used for about three hundred now.
