Kindle / Nook Question
#1
I'm looking at buying a Kindle for my daughter who devours books, but I wonder how expensive it is compared to just buying the books. She won't get rid of all her books because she re-reads them, so needless to say we are bursting at the seams with books.

If she gets a Kindle do the books only stay on for a specific length of time or once you buy it do you always have it...until you run out of space?

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I don't know about the kindle, but I have a nook so I'll tell you about that.

When you buy a book it is always on there unless you manually delete it. There is an option (don't know if kindle has this) where you share books with other people who have nook's and after like 14 days it either locks or gets deleted. (not exactly sure how this works...I've never tried it)

I got an e-reader for the same reasons as you! Too many books, but don't want to get rid of them. I can't really tell you which one you should get. I think it's all in personal preference.

One other thing, if you buy a kindle, you can't read any nookbooks on it. And vice versa. With my nook, I can't read kindlebooks. Just something to consider. You can also check and see if your local library has ebooks. Mine does and you can rent them.

Sorry for the rambling...hope this helps.

You can use Nook on your computer for free and see if you like it. That's what I have- it's the exact same thing as the hand-held except it's on my laptop! It took about 10 minutes to set up Smile Just go into the B&N page and you'll see the link. You'll know in a day if you like it, plus you can see how the words look, etc.

You don't run out of space because your library is held by B&N, not your computer/device. (like iTunes)

The books I have are only free ones. I know they have a promotional book that's free- and I'll grab it if I see it, but my library currently has 35 nursing/medical texts courtesy of Kaplan. They ran a free promo code, and you could download anything they printed for a week, so I did almost their whole library.

My friend has the Kindle, she is my only source on how it works. She gets a free book every week I think as part of a promo, and she likes it too. I don't think kindle can be put on your laptop though...not sure.

Lastly, I have not yet done it, but I intend on putting my children's homeschool reading list on the Nook via each of their laptops. We use a curriculum that has almost 1200 books, and 99% are old copyright-free works, so there are sites like Project Gutenberg - free ebooks that contain the WHOLE list for free. In fact, Gutenberg has over 35,000 free ebooks that you can put on your kindle/nook.

So, I think you could get her paperless by using your home computer, nook free download and gutenberg! The hand-held device is optional.

I know I am a throwback but the public library is a great resource. I never, ever buy books. And if I want to re-read a book, I just get it from the library again. There's no limit. Smile
I love love love the library, and even get most of my study materials for CLEPs from the library. They also have DVDs such as Ken Burns Civil War, Vietnam, Standard Deviants...

I am a huge fan of my ipad kindle app. I like the kindle better then the nook app but I think that is largly prefernece. I read quite a lot, not very many novels per say but a lot of infomation and non fiction things. I use my ipad to read books on my kindle app almost every night. The books do not go away unless you delete them. Once you pay for it (cheaper then a paperback or hardcover) then its yours. You can also put your own book collection on it. If you have purchased a book already, you can then download that book if possuble from a online source for free cause you already have the book. Much like buying a CD or DVD and also downloading it so then you have both types of the audio or movie. Digital and the acutal disc. I personally a large amount of books and also digital books. I am currently deployed so it is much easier to carry around an ipad than a few books. Plus whatever you have out here you have to take it back with you so... I would have roughly 20-40 books to carry back if I wanted to keep them.

Summary: Buy it. Its a good investment and it will encourage reading, because the supply is endless. Finished a book? ...dont have to go to the store or wiat for mom or dad to take you...just grab another one off the kindle store for 2 bucks. Saves everyone money and time.

I agree with the ipad idea, but the kindle has the text to speech where if you get tired it will read to you. But other than that it for 139$ it gets free 3g. Internet and wifi this is nice if your like me and live in the boondocks and cable internet doesn't reach and only using the phone as a mobile hot spot for school. But any. The kindle is black an white which I don't like. I would say go for a tablet devise like a ipad that can use all ebooks, now I don't say get an ipad they are super expensive. There are cheaper ones on the market I've been looking myself so I can spend 10$ on a school book insted of 125$ for a real one........... I'm tring to find. A decent one around the price of the kindle for 139$ but the feed back reviews are hard to find. One I did find that is like my phone is the .... google android 2.2 8685 tablet I've seen them on sale for 120-150$ like the ipad u can get apps , play games, surf the net, read books, ect plus they have color..... I think its weird they would make a new item like kindle to be only in black and white. And if anyone knows where to get a decent tablet for the same amount of money andhas great feedback reviews let me know.....

I have the Kindle and really like it. The books are yours forever and you can also access them, via a download, on your PC. No glare, thousands of free books and much cheaper than buying books at the store. The only thing that has caused me any trouble was when the keys started fading. I called Amazon and they sent a new one without question. Very good customer service.

Thanks for the great info everyone! Lyanne, we live in a very small rural town and our library doesn't have but a handful of textbooks and my daughter has actually read everything in her age appropriate books that hold any interest to her! They charge an outrageous fee plus shipping for library interloans, so that is out too, as it is usually cheaper to buy it from Amazon with free shipping! Hence, we have almost as many books as our little library! It sounds like this would make a good investment for her, now I'm off to find the best deal. Does anyone know of any other free ebook sites? This sounds like a great way for her to be able to explore other book genres. Thanks again for all the help!

Yes, you can download the kindle to a laptop. I have it on mine.

This is a good point. If she has a computer you can just put the kindle or nook on there. It's free. But if she wants to be able to take it places then you might want to look into the handheld e-reader.
