It says they require the last 30 credits to be earned from UND. Does that mean that the other 90 can be CLEP/DSST, etc?

I know much about Canada! Tell us more about him. Do you know anything about his high school background? Has he completed high school? School or homeschool? Recently? How far has he gone and with what sort of performance in math and physics especially?

I don't know if the cost of UND will be doable for him. I'll have to do some more looking into B&M schools near where he's moving to. There is one school that offers an Associates in Engineering. Is an associates going to get him anywhere? He'll have to have a Bachelor's right?
There are three categories:
1. Technician - associate's degree
2. Technologist - bachelor's degree in engineering technology
3. Engineer - bachelor's degree in engineering
I was reviewing my state's requirements again. They require twice as many years of experience for a person with an engineering technology degree (8 years) than for a person with an engineering degree (4 years). They will also accept degrees in mathematics and physical sciences, but again, the person will need twice as much experience.

Okay, thanks for spelling that out. Makes much more sense now.
I'll take a look at the state requirements tomorrow. He would be working in Ohio if that helps any.

That seems to be the case. If you read the rest of the paragraph, it suggests that CLEP is treated just like any other transfer credit.
Quote:Since
CLEP credit is considered equivalent to credit earned at another
institution, a student wishing to have CLEP credit included
within the last 30 hours must have appropriate petitions approved
by the CLEP Committee and the Dean of the college from which
the student is receiving a degree.

Great!!! Thanks so much! I know he said he has a high school diploma and that he completed 12th grade. As far as I know he went to a public school. It's been awhile though because he's in his 30's. I don't believe he has any college/engineering experience. He's had several circumstances come up in life so he hasn't gone to college yet as far as I know. I'll try and email tomorrow and see if I can find out what high school classes he took. I do know he's a math/science whiz.

Not really.
First of all, the engineering degrees require 129-135 credits Online & Distance Education
Tuition info is here Tuition & Financial Aid | Mechanical Engineering | Degrees | Online Distance | Extended Learning | Academics | UND: University of North Dakota
Here are the requirements for the mechanical engineering degree Mechanical Engineering (ME) < University of North Dakota
He's not going to be able to do 90 credits of CLEP. He can't CLEP out of thermodynamics, for example.

Okay, that's not bad if they allow 90 credits. I'd have to work on a plan to see if he could really get all 90 from testing out. Thanks for your help. I definitely have some direction now.
Another thought, I've looked at two local state schools so far and both only offer Associates. I know you said that Technician isn't great but would he be able to get a job with an Associates and maybe later on get a Bachelors? Someone else I know who works in engineering said a company might even pay to send him back to school. Would that be an option?

But at $170 a credit hour, that's very affordable ...
Thanks cathgirl!! I'll take a look at the requirements and see what he could test out of possibly!!
