Need Suggestions for a friend on Engineering
#1
Hey guys!! Okay, so a friend of mine is wanting to go into either Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. I'd like to give him some information on CLEP, distance learning, etc, but he's from Canada. He's moving here to the States in the near future and I'm pretty sure he wants to get his degree from a US school.

I know next to nothing about Canada and how their education works and I also don't know very much about engineering. What things should he be looking into and paying attention to? Are there any colleges that are known for good engineering programs that accept transfer credit and have lower tuition? He doesn't want a lot of debt so I'm thinking CLEP would be great for him. Should I have him look into one of the Big 3? Does he need a Bachelor's or would an Associate's suffice?

I also don't know what college credits he has (if any) so I know that's not much help. I might be able to find out from him if that would help. I'm basically looking for ideas on where to get him started. I'm not sure where to start. :/

I'm looking for any suggestions!! Thanks you guys!!

If he wants to be an actual engineer in the U.S., then he will need an ABET-accredited bachelor's in engineering. TESC and Excelsior only have ABET-accredited programs in engineering technology. I don't think my state cares if it's engineering or engineering technology, but other states might. Online, ABET-accredited programs are rare.
ABET - Online Programs

I don't think that list is fully up to date. I think a couple of online programs have started this year. Have him take a look at University of North Dakota.

The only school I know that offers CE/ME undergrad degrees online is the University of North Dakota. However, they aren't particularly cheap, although Canadians from Saskatchewan and Manitoba get discounted tuition at UND and CLEP/transfer credits could help reduce costs. Depending on the circumstances, it could probably cheaper/faster to just get the degree at a local B&M.

How would you go about finding out if your state cares about engineering vs. engineering technology?

Thanks for the links. I'll go take a look at Univ. of North Dakota.

Okay, I was starting to think the same thing since I wasn't finding much online for engineering. I'm taking a look at UND, but he's in Ontario so I don't think he'd get the discount. So as long as the school is ABET accredited that's all I need make sure of when looking at B&M schools?

People with engineering technology degrees generally do not become engineers without further study (they are technologists, not engineers). If your friend wants to pursue engineering, an engineering degree is the way to go.

You look for the state's licensing board for professional engineers. An engineering degree will be accepted everywhere, so one might as well go for that. There are no online bachelor's degrees in civil or mechanical engineering technology that are ABET-accredited anyway.

Okay, I guess that rules out the big 3 then. Do you know how much CLEP that UND will accept? I'm having a hard time finding it. I don't know if the cost of UND will be doable for him. I'll have to do some more looking into B&M schools near where he's moving to. There is one school that offers an Associates in Engineering. Is an associates going to get him anywhere? He'll have to have a Bachelor's right?

This.

But, for someone going for mechanical engineering technology (not mechanical engineering) who might read this thread, there is a largely online ABET/ETAC-accredited BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree completion program from Indiana State University. Currently, applicants for the online program must come in with this:

ISU Wrote:An associate of applied science (A.A.S.) or an associate of science (A.S.) in design technology, mechanical engineering technology, or a related major from a regionally accredited college or university.

[And] Courses in the following areas as we do not offer these courses online:

- Computer-aided drafting/design
- Analytical geometry
- College algebra
- English composition
- Speech
- Physics (not a technical physics course)
- Chemistry (not a technical chemistry course)
- Manufacturing processes
- Fundamentals of electronics
