Seems expensive compared to Georgia Tech, UT-Austin, or even UIUC.

I think the price is ok if you want/need something with a lot of prestige.
Personally, I don't think this program will be sustainable.
Vanderbilt is not better than Georgia Tech and UIUC in computer science rankings. How can they try to charge four times the price for a much worse MCS degree? I don't believe many people will choose Vanderbilt's program over Georgia Tech online MCS

Prestigious private university. It’s probably different than ga tech and the likes online with live lectures and professor access. I’m not saying it’s better or worse but some people may think $40k isn’t a bad price considering it’s Vanderbilt.

If you want to get a job in computer science field, Georgia tech or UIUC MCS will be more helpful. They both rank among top 10th in computer science in USA. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-sch...e-rankings Vanderbilt can't even rank among top 50 computer science schools. They're ranked 58th. My question is.. how can they charge four times the price when they can't rank among top 50 computer science schools in US ? I would consider Vanderbilt MCS if they reduce the price down to 10k.

Vanderbilt has the perception of being an elite school, not sure it's worth it with an online program but you may get a more boutique experience and better networking at Vanderbilt. If all things are equal most people would probably choose Vanderbilt over Georgia Tech no matter what US News claim. So I guess it comes down to if the price difference is important and if you think US News ranking is accurate enough on their quality claims.

Nobody really cares if Vanderbilt is ranked 100th by US news. And probably most don’t Even know. But most everyone and employer knowS “Vanderbilt”. I’m not saying it’s worth the money and I’m not saying it’s better than Georgia tech. I’m just saying it’s “Vanderbilt”. That’s what you’re paying for. It’s up to you if you think the $40k is worth it or not.
Vanderbilt is certainly regarded as more prestigious in general, but in the specific field, Tech is going to give you a leg up, at least if we were comparing traditional brick and mortar programs. The reputations of the online programs is up in there air, though at least for tech (and likely Vanderbilt), there's no on-paper distinction between online/B&M.

Tech definitely has a better reputation for comp sci and engineering. I wouldnt choose Vande over Tech for the price difference, but some may. Who knows maybe Vande gives you better/ more one on one for the price. Less students ? I haven’t looked that deeply into it, more professor time instead of ta ? My time frame for Roi is less than most. If I had 25 more work years left maybe. I’m looking for quality and cheap so to speak. |
