Motorola Xoom Reviews anyone?
#1
I've been looking for a tablet/reader/IPAD/pc/etc.. for my wife. I guess the little Acer mini isn't cutting it. One of my Airmen has a Motorola Xoom and swears by it. He says it's not as restricted as the Apple IPAD on the features. It looks a little cheaper also than the IPAD and supposedly does more, well about the same price I guess. Any one here has any experience with this, good or bad reviews?

Have you looked into rooting a Color Nook? It voids the warrenty, but I understand that it makes the Nook like an iPad. I'm mulling over buying one, and doing that.

How does she like the Transformer? I'm looking into the Ipad 2, Tab 10.1 and Transformer and so far I am leaning towards the Asus Transformer due to the cheaper price tag over the other two and and the ability to play flash videos (which I plan on using for hippocampus) over the Ipad.

Thanks!

She loves it. Only downside is this model has no WiFi, although a newer model is supposed to be out soon. You could probably tether it to a phone though. She didn't need WiFi, so it didn't matter to her.

I'm an iPad user, and I didn't buy it, oddly enough I won it in a company raffle. Before I had it, I thought it was silly...overpriced and under featured. But I really disagree now. I think that, despite having fewer features (with the exception of flash, not so many particularly useful ones), the iPad is the hands-down best of the bunch. Especially now, with the iPad 2 and its processing capability and dual cameras.

I feel that, other companies provide the same (and often more) features, but the products lack a certain style. It's hard to explain, but everything Apple does is slick, you feel like you're using a wonderful machine, other products don't offer that

Thanks Ignaz! Are you sure about lack of Wifi though? According to this link:

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101-A1 10.1-Inch Tablet Computer

...I show it has "Wireless 802.11bgn" per the description. Do you mean the 3G option like the IPad 2 where you can use it even when you're away from a wifi hotspot?

I'm going to head over to Office Depot tonight and see if I can test one out and compare it to the Tab 10.1

OE800, nice win! I would jump all over the IPad 2 except the lack of flash capabilities kills it for me. I even paid for and downloaded the Skyfire browser on my IPhone to see if it would play the Hippocampus videos, but alas, no dice.

I agree with our thoughts....I think Apple's closed system does lend itself to having less bugs and it just "feels cleaner", but with that comes the feeling of being locked down if you're the type of user that likes to customize their PC/desktop setup. I personally would be fine with it since I just want to use it to study, if it only played Flash! Sad

I said that wrong. The Transformer is WiFi only. No 3G/4G like some of the other tablets out there.

Yeah, with steve jobs, it is literally personal with adobe. He's willing to explore other options like html5, but wants to bury flash, a bit irrationally.

by the way, wireless bgn doesn't mean 3g, those are different wifi standards, b(oldest) g(current, common) n(newest). 3g is a whole other thing. If you're really interested in speed, why not also consider 4g

Hey guys, I went last night and decided on the Galaxy Tab 10.1

I liked the Transformer well enough, but I absolutely love how light and thin the Galaxy is. I could see disliking the Transformer over time because of the extra weight. Granted, it's not like the ASUS is really heavy, but the Galaxy is right there with the IPad in terms of size and weight...tough to compete with those two if you want something really light!

As far as the interface, it's pretty slick. The graphics and screen are very nice and it's perfect for the three sites (IC, Petersons and Hippocampus) I'm using it with so far.

Again, I would have gone with an IPad if I didn't want Flash, but given my needs, it seems like a good fit (so far). Can't believe how convenient these tablets can be, especially for studying...technology is a beautiful thing Smile
