Passed my Intro to Modern Middle East, and scored a 65! I used instantcert and took my practice test on free-clep-prep, along with wikipedia for some of the more convoluted subjects. No books and no other resources were used, so it's doable. Just make sure you cover everything, and even if you don't know it all by heart be able to identify it.
Some of the stuff that jumped out to me was there were quite a few questions regarding comparing different Mid East leaders. Know these men. From 600 BC to 1990. This was where I felt weakest in this entire test. One subject that I had never heard of was the Treaty of Lausanne. That was the only main curve ball, and I ended up guessing right. Many of the questions also seemed very subjective to what historian analyzed the particular portion of history.
I would say I studied more for this test than I did for my Rise and Fall or the USSR, and this one was a lot easier. Make sure you take the free-clep-prep practice test a couple of times and read the explanations. During my second run through, when I came to a question I didn't know, I would give my best guess, go to the next question, and then look up the answer to the previous question. I would not change my answer, but that was a great way to use the test as a study resource.

*Terms
*Religions, and the differences
*Ottoman Empire. Rulers, laws, terms again.
*Various treaties between Europe and the Middle East
*Actual "modernization" frame
*How the Middle East was affected by WWI and WWII
*Interactions between the different middle eastern nations and their people
*Israel and Palestinians
It's interesting that there was no mention of the Crusades and the Gulf War was just briefly mentioned.
