Do any of you notice this? Some of them are really obvious (to me), but others I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out just what in the heck they are doing/talking about so I go out to the internet looking for calculators and other information and it seems like study.com is wrong. It's especially frustrating with the math things because they put the proper formula right there in the lesson then on the quiz they do some other kind of weird calculation that doesn't produce the same answer as the formula (or as the calculators for the same thing out on the internet). I think they need some auditors/editors to check their lessons. I question just how much of what I'm learning there is actually wrong?

The struggle is real. I have more experienced more examples of this than I can count in my last study.com math class. It's frustrating as hell. I submitted a few of the errors to them. I left them feedback in my review. Ultimately though, it'll probably stay about the same, so I'll just take my free credit and move on.

Hey there,
I was going over one of my practice final exams for the MAT 102 course and I found a mistake in the practice final. The question reads:
17. A four-sided shape has all right angles and sides of equal length. That means the shape is both a _____
Incorrect
Topic: Geometry
Both of these options are correct
Watch correct answer
square and a rectangle
square and a rhombus
Neither of these options are correct
Study.com says that the correct answer is BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS ARE CORRECT which that isn't true. A rhombus does NOT 4 right angles. I just confirmed this with TWO math teachers =)

Study.com is correct in this case. Although a rhombus usually references an polygon with four equal sides that is not a square (and thus does not have 90 degree angles), the actual definition is a quadrilateral with sides of equal length. In simpler terms, a quadrilateral is four sided figure; a rhombus is a special type of quadrilateral with all four sides of equal length; a square is a special type of rhombus with all angles equal.

i've found plenty of errors at straighterline too, for whatever that's worth

I was thinking if they would pay people a little bit to submit errors, showing the work/evidence as to why it's incorrect, they could improve their site quickly. There are a lot of people taking these courses but I think most people think it's not worth the bother to try and report errors to them. I'd take the time to do it if they paid me a bit or maybe give me a free exam after finding a certain number of errors. They could clean up their site in no time and people would be learning correct material.

That is a great idea. I'd take every one of their classes and submit all the errors I find if my only payment was getting the credit and not being charged.

A rhombus CAN have 4 right angles (a square is a rhombus), but it doesn't necessarily have 4 right angles. So the question is not a good one, even if the answer COULD be correct.
I think with math questions, the answer has to be exactly, 100% correct. There can't be ambiguity.
But technically, a square and a rhombus is the correct answer.

I appreciate all the responses. But, a square ALWAYS has 4 right angles. A rhombus doesn't necessarily have to have 4 right angles. Usually, a rhombus does not have 4 right angles. So I agree with you dfrecore - this question is not credible and wayyyyy too ambiguous. I asked to high school state-certified math teachers and they both said a rhombus doesn't always have 4 right angles and thought the question wasn't a good one..

I'm glad I'm not the only one finding errors. I do keep wondering "what am I not getting?" My problem is with English Composition CLEP. I am having a great deal of trouble learning all the rules for citations - MLA, APA & CMS. I know it is important to use many different sources for studying so I've been checking all of my answers in style manuals and other websites. What I am wondering are these Instacert "actual questions" (along with the incorrect answers) that might be on the "actual CLEP test", or should I go with what I am learning from the other sources. Honestly, after I pass these tests I will never ever have to write anything in the APA style. I don't really care if I learn it I just want to pass the test. I've flagged the questions/answers I thought were wrong but I don't know if anyone is following up. On a more positive note: I just passed American Lit CLEP with a 64 - I will be pleased to not remember the difference between Edward Taylor and Jonathan Edwards ever again.
