Military Dependents
#1
I was wondering if the military paid for dependents to take CLEP/DSST.

Specifically, the AF. Oh, also if the one in the military is retired.

No, dependents are not covered on the testing. Just FYI.....Dependents and DOD employess and their families do get the military rate at some schools. TESC gave me the military tuition plan but they really stick it to you on the individual TECEP fees. In the end it is still a good deal, especially if you can use CLEP/ DSST etc for the testing. I am looking at Masters programs and have been asking for a military/ DOD rate even if it is not posted. Every school so far has offered at least 10% off the per credit fee. Not a huge amount but it covers a cold beer when the course is completed. Also, U of P (I have no plans of taking any courses there) reduces the per credit fee from $350+/- to $250 a credit unit. It pays to dig around and to ask even when the reduction is not listed on the college web site.

At the Fort Lewis, WA and McChord AFB education centers, they do charge dependents and retirees the fee ($80) for the CLEP test but if you are military affiliated (dependents & retiree) they do not charge the testing fee ($15). I think most base education centers have similar policies.

I am in the USCG. Dependents are allowed to take CLEPs and they are covered. You can look up all of the other information, I don't have it handy.

Do you know if dependents of other services can go on a USCG base to take CLEPs and be covered?

It isn't a program that is only on CG bases, the program is something the CG pays for dependents of CG personnel to do. I am pretty sure it is only for CG personnel's dependents. I know there is criteria about where you take it and other things, I just don't have all of the information in front of me.
