Apologies if this has been asked and answered - I can't find it.

What is the "best" place to get math credits?  I took college algebra when I got my AAS. Unfortunately, I didn't really study or... try... so I passed with a non-transferable D.  

While the current degree I am looking at won't require super high-level math, my future plans include more science-focused studies where math credits will become important.  I would also like to actually understand the math when I am finished.

Is there an alternative credit provider that would be best for this purpose?

It really, really depends on what school you plan to go to. Also, the degree you want. My general-purpose answer would be to take ASU's self-paced College Algebra and Precalculus for FREE for NO CREDIT. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Ar...al_Learner Then you could do something like take Precalc from Study.com and/or Statistics from Sophia to show on your transcript that you just had a rough class and you're able to pass more advanced math now.

The only way to actually "erase" that D would be to use ASU for study and then go back and retake the exact same Algebra from the exact same school again. The D itself might not transfer, but it will still show up on your transcripts.

If you're going to the Big 3 or any CBE programs such as WGU/UMPI/UMass Global (Brandman), alternative credit friendly colleges/universities etc, then taking ACE recommended for credit courses should be fine. I would taking both the Foundations courses at Sophia.org and the College Algebra/Statistics courses, so that is 4 courses to refresh your math or provide you more learning in that direction. When that's done, and if you need more, build up with Study.com as they have other math classes such as Calculus, Geometry, etc...

SDC and Sophia are good for credit but if you really want to understand then I think that ALEKS is a win. ASU uses ALEKS for its Algebra and Precalculus courses, hence my recommendation.

I am at APU working (most likely, still waiting for transfer credit evaluation confirmation) on a Fire Management Degree.

My current program requires only 3 college credits in math. The ones listed in the gen ed curriculum include: Accounting 1, College Algebra, College Trigonometry, Math for Liberal Arts Majors, Calculus, Accounting for Non-Accounting Majors, Fundamentals of Programming, or Introduction to Statistics.

After this, I plan to seek a degree in either Natural Sciences, which will require, in addition to the gen eds above, Calculus, Calculus II, and Statistics or a degree in Environmental Science, which would only require statistics.

I should have room for ACE or RA. APU requires 30 hours of resident credit, I have 18 hours of General Ed left to take that I plan to do through APU, I plan to take another 12 hours of Gen Eds through APU so that I can apply that as my resident credit going forward and only have to take courses which I can't get elsewhere for less $. Thanks to previous coursework, almost all of my major hours are finished, as will be most of my electives. 

My thought with the math is that, even if taking it elsewhere and transferring it in costs me the ability to have 30 hours of Gen Eds from APU to meet the residency requirements, I will almost certainly have a number of courses for the major that I can't transfer in, so having a few non-resident math classes should not be an issue.

Especially with math it probably makes sense to try and understand it. One course builds off the previous.

The only alternative credit source for calc 2 that I know of is straighterline, which has mixed reviews. Study.com calc 1 will not prepare you for calc 2 from any source in my opinion. I agree with Rachel's recommendations for coursework up to precalculus level. ASU also has brief calc for business majors or full calc for engineers/science majors, but you'd still have to find another source for calc 2(probably a college/university).

Statistics can be done almost anywhere. I've done stats from both study and Sophia. Both should work, depending on which platform you prefer. Neither source is particularly rigorous, so if you really want to learn stats, you may want to look at another source.

Is my understanding correct that Charter Oak won't take ALEKS raw, but will take it if cooked through ASU?

ASU uses the ALEKS platform as it's course material. The credit is transcripted(RA) through ASU the same as if you were sitting in a classroom at ASU campus. I can't comment on whether COSC accepts ALEKS as ACE credit, but if they accept RA credit, they should accept ASU.
