Mass Communication I and II at TESU
#1
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share that TESU will no apparently no longer accept CSU-Global CBE Mass Communication and Society COM325EX for the mass communication II requirement.  They denied me for it back in July, but another member here told me they received a waiver from the Dean's office to use it.  I emailed back and forth with TESU recently asking for the same waiver as the other student and was denied.

CSU-global also doesn't offer the mass communications I CBE anymore.

I don't want to take Mass Comm I and II from TESU if avoidable, because the mentors for those classes have consistently awful reviews.  My local cc doesn't offer them and no colleges in my state seem to offer them online either.   If anyone has any suggestions for where to take those it would be appreciated.

If this is helpful, here's the link to search for online courses currently offered across the public universities in North Carolina. https://online.northcarolina.edu/unconline/courses.php

Since I'm still in the early stages of trying to understand how to find outside exams/courses that will fit at TESU (I'm considering this route for the BA in Communications for my youngest son) I wasn't really sure what classes to look for that will fit. For example, for the BA in Communications at TESU it says Mass Comm I, Mass Comm II and Comm Theory are required but I can't even find the course descriptions for those classes on TESU's own website. Is the TESU Mass Communications I and II requirement their COM 120 and COM 121 classes? Or is it something else? And what is the Comm Theory course code and description?

If Mass Comm is a 100 level course at TESU (again, sorry I don't know enough about this yet) you can search for online courses across the NC Community colleges through this site: http://vlc.nccommunitycolleges.edu/stude...-a-course/
COM 150 is entitled: Introduction to Mass Communication

Magflo, sorry for the disappointing news about the CSU-global CBEs.
TESU's BA communications can't be fully tested out anymore, but if you are interested in test out exams, I will post the ones I know.

You are correct, Mass Communication I is COM-120, Mass Communication II is COM-121.
If you download the 2017-18 course catalog here https://www.tesu.edu/academics/catalog/undergraduate , some of the COM course descriptions are on page 20.  I would check the descriptions for any courses you think may work to see if they are similar.

I don't see the course number for Comm Theory but maybe someone else here will know it.

Communications Theory is COM100 at TESU

Study.com has 6 courses that transfer over as Communications: Comm 101, 102, 120, & 301, all LL. Then Business 313 which is UL and Business 113 which is LL. Your main problem is going to be finding enough UL courses, you need 5 and TESU only offers 3. So not really sure where you'd get the 5th one from.

I have something on my ACE transcript that transferred in as Mass Communications but I don't remember what it is. So you can still test out of that for sure. Not sure what you can do about Mass Comm 2 or Comm Theory though. Probably need to talk to an adviser I guess but it seems like you'll definitely have to take some of it at TESU or COSC or whatever

Just a quick note to say I think the SL course Business Communications would be a bust. It's not listed as coming in with a COM prefix . https://www.straighterline.com/colleges/...uivalency/

jsh1138,
Could you please post the course from your ace transcript that you used for mass communications I? I still need this class and have searched extensively for a way to test out of it, with no results. However if it was from Shmoop or CSU global, those aren’t available anymore Sad Thank you!

I got that from a degree plan posted here on the forum and didn’t realize. Thank you for the corrected info! I don’t need this class but anyone who is thinking about using it should check with advising first.

Comm courses that don't have COM as the prefix will still work. TESU normally considers any course with "communications" in the name to be a COM course. Their own Managerial Communications and Marketing Communications courses have always worked there.
