I continue to review free or inexpensive sources to help our forum members conquer statistics. From other threads it's been quite apparent that the ALEKS way does not yield easy results for a concept driven course like statistics because it cannot present the "big picture" in an easy to understand relevant structured sequence. I have discovered a new possibility of combining this just started free EdEx MOOC (
https://www.edx.org/course/i-heart-stats...ex-soc120x) to teach the concepts in a highly structured, simple, and engaging manner. When finished with this offering, the student would go on to ALEKS or the DSST to earn credit via ACE.
I am looking for some immediate volunteers to try out my scheme. All the MOOC modules are already posted. So if you wanted to get through this phase fast, I can't see anything stopping you. If interested, join this thread for more info or shoot me a PM. BTW this stats MOOC is taught by sociologists and
not mathematicians or engineers.

i can definitely give this a shot; i'm certainly looking for a way to get through statistics quickly. i tend to consider myself relatively "math-savvy" but statistics still eludes me, lol.

The best course I've ever taken was Udacity's free Intro to Statistics course seen here which I strongly recommend:

MOOCs again paving the road again in higher education, making learning actually fun, interesting, and free.

This Udacity offering isn't too bad, but to me it just doesn't have simplicity of the "big picture" structure that the new EdEx course has. I have been sampling them all on behalf of my math-phobic students. Here's to you NatalieDujour for helping me to prove that I might have found the closest thing to the "Holy Grail" on this subject.

I really liked the Sophia course for this. I tried Aleks and Straighter line (Saylor) as well as various videos I had found. I think Sophia option for videos from 3 different professors really made it click for me.
Currently studying for: Still deciding.

I'm game to try this. I did not like having to slog through ALEKS, though it still took WAY less time than a traditional course, and was cheaper too. I'm signing up for the course now, and I'll keep you posted.
ETA: I'm guessing going for the verified certificate won't result in credits, right?

The "Verified Course" does not result in any credits. You don't need to spend the money. It is simply an ego game. However, if your ego is "pushed" to a higher level of effort because you signed up for this option, it might be worth it. Thanks for joining me in this experiment!!!

I have sampled the Sophia course. And it will work for almost anyone who can cram similar to an InstaCert scenario to pass their requirements for stats. However, IMHO you will not really be left with any lasting knowledge. The course modules are poorly sequenced and unstructured. While you are pushed to finish fast by design (60 days w/o extension) you are constantly hunting and pecking through the various video lessons with no understanding of the "big picture". Save money; learn more; try my recommendation; let's see what happens!

A lot of Edx courses have the "Honor" certificate which is like $20 or free so long as you do the homework assignments, etc. You won't get college credit, but it's nice to put on your resume. It shows initiative especially if you can prove it.

That's where MOOCs courses like Udacity, or Stanford, Coursera, KhanAcademy, etc. really shine. A lot of people have this misconception that doing an MOOC from an ivy league school is going to be too hard. No, a lot of the times the course is really interesting, well done, and polished. Best course I ever took was Harvard CS50x - the best introduction to Computer Science ever. I wish every course was like that one.
