Wisdom Teeth
#11
I remember back when I was 18 in the Army and the dentist told me that if my wisdom teeth came in, they'd come in impacted and suggested their removal. At the time I wasn't in any pain and declined. Very stupid of me. I should have taken advantage of that free dental care when I had it!

Fast forward to when I turned 27. My wisdom teeth decided to erupt and I was in horrible pain. I was mean to everyone, my husband, my friends, coworkers, etc. And the worst thing was my dental insurance was horrible. It would cover the extractions and only local anesthetic!

The oral surgeon advised me that he wouldn't recommend just local anesthetic for removal of all my wisdom teeth. So I shelled out $500 of my own money for the privilege of being knocked out.

I was hallucinating like crazy. Interesting experience. I felt like I was inside my own mouth watching the dentist remove my teeth.

Like someone else mentioned- I also ate lots of soft foods for two to three weeks afterwards, mashed potatoes, jello ,etc. not because I wanted to, but because that's all my mouth could handle. I lost 15 lbs in two weeks. My hubby who had his wisdom teeth taken out right after mine lost 20 lbs.

I do not recommend the Wisdom teeth diet at all! But just expect some weight loss as an unexpected side effect after the procedure.

I hear you, it's been almost a week and I find myself having mood swings due to lack of real food and still having light pain, more so on one side then the other. I honestly wish I didn't even bother getting them removed, but I had 3 cavities left and they were on the wisdom teeth.

Question for those who have gotten their wisdom teeth removed, it's been a week, my right side feels pretty good, my left side though still feels strange, I only had the bottom one removed on that side, but it feels strange, not like a really bad pain but more of a constant dull pain, as if I have food stuck somewhere in there and I just want to pull it out, but there is nothing in there as I have cleaned it and the dentist didn't see anything in there.

Is this something like a dry sockot? Or would I know if I had a dry socket? The dentist said everything looks good and was clean and healing good but I am semi worried, even though its only been a week.

Dry sockets feel like you have an earache. A dull burning pain from your jaw, up your cheek, and into your ear.

Thankfully I only had upper wisdom teeth to be taken out. But I had jaw surgery at the same time, so I didn't notice my wisdom teeth over much. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin You guys think you have it bad.....try the soft food diet for SIX WEEKS! hilarious

Actually, it wasn't too bad. I drank a lot of protein drinks and had a lot of homemade soup and yogurt and stuff. The worst part was when Thanksgiving dinner rolled around. I got creative and pureed the turkey and then mixed it with my mashed potatoes. Wasn't bad, actually.

You seen that right, 5! They decided to go for oral surgery (a wise choice) and removed all of them at once. Took a few hours. I was SIQ (Sick in quarters) for 2 days. I couldn't eat anything hard for a week. I always had the PBJ sandwiches (they get old real fast!). In Power School (C school), a buddy of mine had his pulled out. They did it on a Friday and was in good shape by Monday. Minor bleeding and the whole gauze ordeal really stunk for him but I tried to help out as much as I could. I think you are in good shape and I hope you feel better soon.
The CDR on my ship was adamant about mine coming out in 1987. Said they were going to give me big problems. I actually refused, I said they were fine and that was it. She put a sticky on my med record basically stating I didn't get the treatment. Here I am in 2007 and there still in and OK. I found out later from different dentists that they pushed this procedure to eliminate the need for medevacs. I was always told if they don't bother you, leave em alone......that's what I did. Sometimes when there removed, they can float your teeth. Hundreds of ears of corn later and there still chompin!
