Language testing parity - CLEP vs CEFR

Tonight I start my German language individual instruction and while I am doing this for my own personal benefit I am starting to consider how this can be (eventually) used towards the completion of my degree.(especially considering that the language test can be worth up to 12 credits) The EU uses the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessment of language ability. Language instructors therefore teach to the CEFR standards and all training materials and progression through the classes are based on these levels, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 & C2.

So, while I am fully aware that there is no direct connection between CLEP testing and CEFR assesment, I was wondering if anyone here could draw a dotted line between the CEFR levels and a CLEP test result awarding 6 or 12 credits. In other words, does it take approximently a B1 level to get a 12 on the CLEP? Would an A2 most likely merit 6 credits? It would be great if there was a direct credit award for CEFR levels for credit as I will be testing along the way but I know that's not the case. Just trying to get an idea of 'when I'll be ready' to tackle the big language CLEP.

I cannot answer your question specifically, but I do want to caution you when referring to the amount of credit you might receive. The school you are attending/enrolled in is the one to determine how much credit you will receive. I have seen some post a single cut-off for the passing score (50) where the student might be awarded 3 or maybe 6 credits. Then there are those who are more generous -- not only providing a cut-off for a level 2 score but 4 semesters worth of credit. Many schools do award 3 credits per semester, but I also know of some that award 4 credits per semester and two levels. Those students who pass in the level 2 of the CLEP exams could get as high as 16 credits at these rare schools.

Bottom line, folks, always check your schools for passing score requirements and credit awarded.

My community college gave me 16 credits for my Spanish clep (476) SPAN-100, 101, 201, 202, but again every school may have different policies as for awarding credits for particular exams.

I think that A1-A2 level would be worth 3 credits (beginner level). To get 6 credits, you'd have to attain a B1- B2 (intermediate level) of language proficiency, and C1-C2 (advanced level) - to get up to 12 credits, but I might be wrong.

Thanks for the heads up on the issue of credit award being dependant on the school you are applying to. I was aware of this and was just speaking in generalities but it's good to have the issue out there as a reminder and to inform others that might see this post later.

My instructor had no idea about this issue, which is hardly surprising. I didn't ask her, but mearly talked about it with her when the topic of testing for CEFR certifications came up. It behoves me get at least a B1 certification simply because it opens up both the chance to go to a German university or get a job at a German speaking company (many companies here have English as thier office language). That being the case I will continue to keep an eye on this issue and report back either what I hear or what my experiences are once I actually take the test(s)

I guess that you need to take CLEP for your degree related purposes. Since you are in Germany, and will be looking for a job then I think it would be a good idea to consider taking one of Goethe Institut certifications:

In Europe those language certificates are more valued than in the States. (Personally, I have my DELE Superior Spanish examination (C2 level), but nobody even cared about that when I applied for jobs here.
