Congrats Jennifer.

I'm curious what does "Educational Technology" mean? Did your experience with "testing out" help you make that decision. Do you think you will be in a better position to help others with "Educational Technology" because of your long journey? Or does Educational Technology have nothing to do with online courses, testing etc...?

Jennifer you know I believe no-one can ever be like Shoto he is definately an inspiration though isn't he. I have the AS and BS and I know I can't finish a masters as fast. My program works with traditional semesters and I can probably only swing 1 - 2 classes a semester and need 12 classes. Oh well I will take them as fast as I can afford to money and time wise. Hey you are one to talk look at all of your credential, pretty impressive there as well. How much per credit is Western NM maybe I will look at them as they sound much more reasonable than what I am going to pay, which seemed so reasonable when compared to John Hopkins.

Western New Mexico Univeristy is $158 per credit grad tuition. Yes, that's 6 grand in all.

Well, I know I am making a contribution in a different way as a result of going back to school. I have one student who enrolled in a bachelor program due to my prompting, and another who is planning a few CLEPs. So, just the one on one conversations I have with my students are more education-centered. As to the future, I have high hopes that the program I teach in will be able to do great things. We are a model now for a few things we do, and so we get a lot of attention that way- I think if I can integrate technology into our program in a way that opens up new areas of revenue for our department, that will probably be a very good thing. If I could arrange for our department to get several courses up and online, this would be very exciting.

For me, it will. I hope to write my F2F classes up as candidates for online courses- plus my college is sending me to a training to write up several new courses. I think the timing is perfect, because I will have great info coming at me from 2 directions.
Once I earn 18 credits in Ed Tech, I'll be doing the rest of my masters in English :eek:

Does Ed Tech have anything to do with Special Education? If I wasn't afraid of how long it would take me I might think about something like that.

That is so cool I have been debating on teaching classes once I finally get my masters its great that you are going to teach online classes and shoto is as well. My sticker shock comes from $715 a credit, I need 36 credits so my masters will cost me $25740. It is a good program but now I am looking around for something more reasonable.

I don't know your age, but I think you are an adult too- for me, I just couldn't justify giving that much of my family's resources to a degree for me. I have 4 children who must come first. In my case, I have a part time job teaching, and that has been my mainstay for 16 years. Only this year did I start teaching 9 credits, I had been only doing 6 per semester the past 15 years. I'll be honest, (it's a matter of public record anyway) my income from teaching is $7500 per year before taxes Big Grin . So, this masters is really for the "option" of teaching outside my department if the situation presents itself, and for a little bit of personal development so I can do this course development on the side. I am already the course developer for culinary and hospitality- but it's not enough $ for anyone to do as a career. I earn $250 per credit, but once a course is developed- it's done. In my department, there are 4 new courses coming (12 cr), so I will get to do them....but that's it, it isn't on going income. (and I don't need the masters to do it- I have been doing it all along with an associate's degree, it's a "content expert" thing, not an academic thing) So, for me, I couldn't see sinking a lot of time and money into a degree that may not have financial returns.

For a good investment, my $6000 should be able to add an increase to my pay- will it? That remains to be seen. My teaching pay is a flat rate, I could have a PhD and it wouldn't matter. I would like my degree to return 4x more above and beyond what I would earn without it. That's the calculation I used when making this decision. I think it will pay off, but only if my situation changes a bit. I have serious doubts that the other degree I considered (University of Illinois $20K) would give me $80K above what I would otherwise earn. The University of Adelaide cost $25K, and pigeon-holed me into a single subject which I CERTAINLY would not be able to get a solid return on my investment. A chef is still a chef, and well....the pay is what the pay is.

If I were young, I would spend $$$ on the best masters degree program I could get into without question. I think THATs when you get the best return because you have a lifetime to build on that degree. For me, it's just a way to teach an English Comp class and take Culinary Math to the web Wink
