Just Beat Cancer, Researched Colleges 4 Monthes, What Do You Think of this Plan? :)

I just beat cancer (adrenal) and it wiped out my 20’s (hmu if you ever get it, I have a lot of resources, I killed mine) but I have 118 CSU transferable community college credits to show for it and have been going through these forums the last few days with one year of the Pell Grant left. The cancer lasted 8 years and I used the pell to stay financially afloat for 5 of them.

Trying to get two bachelors degree to not have to take the CSETS (California Subject Examination for Teachers) for entry into a multiple subject teaching credential and then adding on a single subject social science teaching credential after doing the multiple subject.

AB 130 new bill allows this as long as the major is exactly worded as a degree in Liberal Studies for entry into a multiple subject credential (K-8) and a second degree in Social Science (what I actually want to teach but is very hard to get a job for) grades 8-12 for entry into a single subject credential program (they last a year)

I want stability financially and the ability to teach k-12 not just either grades  k-8 or grades 8-12 so as to always have access to a job during recessions/hardship/relocating in public or private education
Reason I want to do this fast as I can is that we want to have proper financial stability to have a baby (LATEST) by the time my soon to be wife is 32, shes 28 now, (also a teacher)  I have no real financial contribution yet as far as real salary, and will substitute teach after getting the first bachelors from TESU (or wherever makes the most sense)

So far my plan is TESU Liberal Studies with a concentration in Social Science so that I can then use credits from those to transfer into:

National University for a second bachelors in Social Science

Or hopefully someone knows of somewhere else faster - National University only allows you to take ONE class per month. You can technically take 2 after 3 monthes of having a 3.5 in all coursework but have to pay full price for the second course of like 1688, no scholarships applied, no FAFSA. Yeah. Rip. Forget that.

But that’s my plan, the noob who has 4 monthes of research into all this,

If anyone knows of any better online colleges for this plan, im all ears.

Especially for a major in social science/social sciences –

So heres the current plan and where you  beautiful people step in,

If anyone on earth, literally, would know – its you all. Help me Obi Wan's – youre all (definitely) my only hope – (in doing this right)

How do I take what I have now – (do Sophia, SDC, U of Idaho etc, then TESU as fast as humanly possible,
WHILE doing and putting the classes below where they should be best in a degree plan for  this goal?

Heres the classes for the National University Social Science second degree major:

I ALREADY HAVE AN NU DEGREE plan - i would have attached my transcripts and the plan but didnt see a button to add files in DM's -  and dont need any others classes except the ones below (and in information literacy course im asking them if the edx microbachelors that works at TESU will work for theirs)

Franklin University apparently also has a program that might be WAY faster than doing NU after TESU for 10- monthes but I don’t know what im looking at class wise at the bottom. TESU lists it by each section and gives alt classes you can do.

https://www.franklin.edu/degrees/bachelors/social-sciences

(ignore NU’s website if you go there, they have the wrong degree up.)
NU Social Science Degree Prerequisites (have to take these)

HIS 220A United States History I  (Sophia)
HIS 220B United States History II (Sophia)
HIS 233 World Civilizations I        ?(University of Idaho – Independent Study)?
HIS 234 World Civilizations II      ? (University of Idaho – Independent Study)?

POL 100 Intro to Politics          (I think my comparative politics or International relations would work here?)
POL 201 American Politics        (same as above?) or do I need to do this one somewhere else
SCI 300 Geography                 (does 300 mean its not an undergrad course? Intro wouldn’t count?)
ECO 203 Micro Econ              (already have)
ECO 204 Macro Econ              (already have)

Social Science Degree CORE Requirements
(ill have this verified by NU but what i think these *have* to be taken at NU as it says
“students are required to take courses in the order listed”
 but who knows,

regardless if you know anywhere like Sophia, U of Idaho CLEP etc,  where I can take these now, im all ears.

HIS 431 The Ancient World
HIS 432 The Classical World
HIS 433 The Post-Classical World
HIS 434 Modern World, 1500 to Present
HIS 400 Historical Theories and Methods
HIS 360 American Colonial Experience
HIS 361 Making and Sundering of Union
HIS 362 US Between Wars, 1865 - 1917
HIS 363 US Since World War I
HIS 410 California History
HIS 499 Capstone Research Project

Ill reply right now on this with my Regional Credits Smile

Question: does it actually HAVE to be Social Science or can it be History? I ask because both UMPI and TESU have Liberal Studies and History degrees and your degree plan lists so many UL History classes.

Possibility one: go to UMPI for a Bachelor of Liberal Studies. Take some History courses, but mostly not. Enroll at TESU for a BA in History. Gen eds and electives will be waived. You'll need to complete 24 NEW credits in the Area of Study (these cannot be completed simultaneously at Study.com while finishing the BLS); cornerstone will be waived, but you'll need to complete TESU's capstone. Complete History requirements for TESU @ Study.com. Enroll for a single 16-credit flat-rate term at TESU of any "easy" classes, to avoid the residency waiver fee. Done.

Possibility two: Go to TESU for a BALS. Then go to UMPI for a BA History. This would possibly be more expensive, but maybe less convoluted?

Possibility three: Your NU classes are a bit difficult because these are mostly not UL classes elsewhere. However, HIS 400 Historical Theories and Methods may be covered by History 301: Historiography & Historical Methods at Study.com. HIS 361 Making and Sundering of Union might be History 306: The American Civil War Era. At least some of the others might be available at UMPI, depending on exact transfer equivalencies. https://online.umpi.edu/degrees/undergra...l-science/ You could possibly enroll as a non-degree-seeking student and take what you need. You can see a non-degree option as available here: https://expect.umpi.edu/yourpace/ ASU also has some History classes, but they're LL and may not work for your needs: https://ea.asu.edu/courses/

welcome to the world of K-12 education. It will be a wild ride! I don’t know if it is the same where you live, but here in Ohio, the hardest teacher spots to fill have been in Science, Health, and Phys Ed. Followed by Math and special education. If you can be certified in any of those, you may be a hot commodity. Smile

another thing that can give you an edge is if you can coach something… sports, esports, drama…

Just some observations I’ve made over the last decade working in schools.

Most importantly, congratulations on beating cancer!

I think the UMPI BLS followed by TESU BA History seems the least expensive and easiest. Also, then all TESU gen eds would be waived including SOS-110.

Another idea, but idk if it would work given your situation. You could go to TESU and get a BS in Business General Management and a BA in either Liberal Studies or History (or even both. It would be a double major but only degree/piece of paper). This would make it so you'd be getting both degrees at the same time from one school. Which make the most sense financially and logistically. But idk if a BS in Business would be necessary or even help your plans or not. I'm a bit confused as to how it works to be a teacher. But just a thought.

BS in Business (probably General Management) at TESU
BA in Liberal Studies and/or History at TESU (if both it is still only one diploma)

Or have you looked into WGU. They have teaching degrees.

UMPI offers a BA in History so why not just complete that? If you really want, you can complete the BLS from UMPI then complete the BA in History. You can't minor in history and earn the BA in it though. You can also get a BABA from UMPI and a BA in History from UMPI.

@Austin-BeatCancerB17, Stay healthy! You're a survivor and you are staying strong to finish off this elusive degree, good for you!  I'm still a bit confused as you haven't used the template/addendum, particularly the 'extra info' I look for, such as your study habits, preference for exams or assessments/writing assignments, etc.  Also confused on why you're going for the BALS Social Science and then a BA Social Science, it's a bit redundant and most schools will not allow this as they require at least 30 credits that are different for the second degree...

Depending on numerous variables such as your budget, commitments, study habits, time, etc, you may want to do this differently.  I recommend or suggest you do the following, UMPI BLS with a minor of your choice, be it history or a social science minor such as psychology, in fact, you can do both.  I would then ladder that into a WGU Bachelors degree for teaching purposes. Note: You really need to review WGU's requirements and also the state regulations for licensing, it's on their webpage as well.  Take your time, don't rush into this, you've got a lot of info to process...

Thank you all so much for the input so far! and the congratulations <3

and my apologies Bjcheung77, I know you must be so tired of people just posting here without actually reading through how to set up a post properly when you all put in so much of your time and effort just trying to help them xD - believe it or not I actually did take about 5 hours two nights ago on one that addressed everything that you and a few others asked for as concise as I could, but at around 5am I went to post it and saw the word count was too high. I didn't know I could reply on my own message yet, and I was so tired I just gave up trying to cut out the required characters and then woke up and wrote that shorter one above ^

Let me go and condense that original one addressing all your questions right now, apologies for not getting back to all of you sooner by the way - I really do appreciate you all, my soon to be brother in law is going through a difficult divorce and needed legal help today so my soon to be wife and i were on the phone with different lawyers and groups for his hearing tomorrow. I just now am able to read all of this. Let me get that all written up.

Oh if anyone sees this while I do - unfortunately one of the degrees needs to be in specifically social science, (I thought history would work too and was pretty deflated to find out it didn't) because everything you all recommended I was considering already from before xD and very excited to endeavor on (like a dual major at TESU, how ez pz would that have been? Tongue) but yeah - has to be in social science - see this:

you all might actually find this very interesting and useful, for anyone asking questions about wanting to teach in CA and not wanting to take those hardcore very difficult CSETS (the CSETS are required to gain entry into the appropriately corresponding credential program- and they're pretty rough, to the point where the CTC is now trying to make other ways of waiving /satisfying them:

as of 2019 - a new bill called AB 130:

"2. Successful completion of an academic major in the subject they will teach.
a. For Single Subject credentials, the major must be in one of the subjects named in
Education Code section 44257(a).
b. For Multiple Subject credentials, the major must be in liberal studies or an
interdisciplinary major that includes coursework in the content areas identified
in subdivision (b) of California Education Code section 44282.

https://www.ctc.ca.gov/docs/default-sour...ac402ab1_2

ARTICLE 4. Credential Types [44250 - 44277] ( Article 4 enacted by Stats. 1976, Ch. 1010. )

This is what article 44257(a) says:
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces...awCode=EDC

44257.

(a) The commission shall issue single subject teaching credentials only in the following subjects:

(1) Agriculture.

(2) Art.

(3) Business.

(4) Dance.

(5) English.

(6) World Language.

(7) Health Science.

(8) Home Economics.

(9) Industrial and Technology Education.

(10) Mathematics.

(11) Music.

(12) Physical Education.

(13) Science.

(14) Social Science.

(15) Theater.

this is why I had the idea of doing TESUs Liberal Studies with a concentration in Social Science (but am now thinking it might not work per BJ's input. (I just need a liberal studies though, in any concentration (the liberal studies degree = ability to get the k-8 credential without that particular CSET test) then the second degree in specifically social science which means I now don't have to take the CSET test for a single subject credential in social science which is the ability to teach grades 8-12.

Give me a bit to work on answering your budget, commitments, study habits, time, etc, questions as per listed in the "new to the forum" section Smile

Darn, that's stupid! (Not you, the requirements for "Social Science" and not History.) As I'm sure you've already discovered, Social Science doesn't seem to be as widely available as History degrees. Alas.

In that case, I would suggest going to TESU for Liberal Studies, then attend UMPI for one session as a non-degree student for the relevant History classes, and finish up at NU with your Social Sciences degree. Unless someone else has an easier/cheaper degree suggestion for a Social Science degree, that'll probably be your best bet. You can see course suggestions for Liberal Studies here: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...egree_Plan I would suggest just taking whatever strikes your fancy for Liberal Studies. Not too many History classes, if any, because NU might have policies that would prevent their being used in the Social Sciences degree.

"Frequently Asked Questions
Subject Matter Requirement
1. What degree majors are acceptable for Single Subject credential candidates who wish to
meet the subject matter requirement via degree major?
a. At this time, the degree major must correspond to the authorization to be listed
on a Single Subject Credential. For example, a degree authorization in English
would qualify for a Single Subject credential in English. The law as written
requires that the degree major exactly align with the subject area of the
credential, meaning that a candidate who is completing a Single Subject
credential program in Science: Biological Science would need to have earned a
degree in Biology or Biological Science. A degree in Environmental Biology would
not be acceptable for this purpose.
2. What if a candidate’s degree is in a closely related subject, but is not in the exact subject
of the single subject credential they seek?
a. The current statutory language does not provide leeway for the acceptance of
closely related subjects; the match must be exact. The Commission has begun
work on emergency regulations that would expand the degree majors that could
meet the Subject Matter Requirement through subsumed subjects or through
evaluation of the coursework taken to complete the degree. These regulations
would clarify that the subsumed subjects as outlined in Title 5 section 80005
would be acceptable degree majors for meeting subject matter. This flexibility is
not available until and unless it is approved by the Office of Administrative Law."

https://www.ctc.ca.gov/docs/default-sour...ac402ab1_2

sorry that was supposed to be posted earlier, thats literally showing exactly why it needs to be in the relevant degree

and Rachel i know right? also I know you meant not me haha

interesting, so you recommend UMPI after TESU, as non degree for the history classes. thats actually very smart, i hadnt considered that, I saw you mentioned it but it might work here as well

NU said i only have to do 10 courses with them, my idea is to do the the harder, major requirements elsewhere, ill ask them if im able to do that, but as for these LL pre-reqs listed in my first post - do you have any easier recommendations to do them other than what i have listed? Is that geography 300 mean its a 300 class? what SDC, sadly not sophia but one of those would work? I heard study.com is kinda difficult and have scoured degree forum for the term University of Idaho independent study and have heard mixed things, seems to depend on the prof you get. (i saw someone here recommend U of idaho for world history) (just checked, of course it was dfrecore who recommended them) lol like i said, savant. im going to check with NU emailing right now to see if i can do those as equivalencies. your possibility three option.

I think one of the biggest things that would help me from you guys here is if anyone knows of any online colleges, as Rachel was also saying, that offer a social science/social sciences degree? Im looking into https://www.franklin.edu/degrees/bachelo...l-sciences
CSU Chico and CSU San Bernardino do as well but *way* too slow. trad colleges.

NU with scholarship is about 1k per class, not bad at all. but very slow. 11 monthes and then on top of that i then need to still do the actual credential program itself

I think the thing to do right now is to get the BALS/LS from TESU/UMPI depending on my transfer credits above and sophia classes etc I can do, and then go right into a multiple subject (elementary school) teaching credential program - probably the masters from WGU as BJ was saying, then swing back and do one by one while I substitute teach

(you need a bachelors to substitute teach in CA)
use subbing to get my feet in the door (my soon to be wife, id call her fiancée but haven't proposed just yet Wink is also a 2nd grade elementary school teacher, so she can help put a good word in) while subbing, do NU for the 11 monthes (yuck) but definitely (hopefully depending on their structure) easy with one course a month)

complete that and then do the like i think its 3 or 4 what are called "add on credential courses" to then get an add on Social Science credential and viola, 2 bachelors, a masters, high up on payscale, in the district and good to go.

the kicker is this and why im here now - i really really would prefer to NOT do the 11 months and do the two bachelors BEFORE the teaching credential program (cause we all know life happens) (its a year long credential program, all of them are) theres GOT to be a school, online, that offers a social science degree that will allow high transfer classes, that i can get done sooner...

if anyone knows im all ears

also if someone can knab dfrecore or whoever is knowledgeable at looking at credits and knowing where to put them in a degree plan - thats why i originally posted in this particular section, no rush at all - you guys almost shouldn't exist, let alone this forum. its like a literal goldmine of hard to find hidden information.

lets say its a degree plan with TESU with the concentration in social science, using the courses i posted for NU using the ones available AT TESU, the ones that would work at UMPI with Rachels idea as a non degree student and then sophia/sdc, U of idaho etc for the harder to find ones, to save money and time.

dfrecore's said before that TESU is often wrong and not very helpful for students over the last ten years that hes seen in putting together degree plans and they havent changed an iota. i trust his judgement and all of yours.

ill keep looking for other colleges that have social science degrees. Its tough cause when you search 'social science' in google, it gives degrees IN the social sciences, like pysch, soc, history etc. ill try chatGPT too maybe itll be able to find some.

that 11 monthes for is brutal, i wanted that to be for the credential program.

basically i wanted to do this as fast as i can to not allow life to get in the way, money isnt too much of an obstacle, i can take of student loans,

ill do a quick rundown right now of the template/addendum

For HIS 233 World Civilizations I and HIS 234 World Civilizations II, you might be able to take World History from Sterling College? They're $145/cr and it's possible that some of their other History classes might also work for NU: https://online.sterling.edu/history/

If it needs to be World Civilizations specifically, PennFoster has what appears to be World Civilizations II, but not I. The ACE page is here: https://www.acenet.edu/National-Guide/Pa...65f38bf0e1 It costs $419 for this ACE-recommended course: https://www.pennfoster.edu/college/indiv...al-studies

Everything else I can see is either World History or Western Civilization. Some schools do permit some substitutions, but others will require specific courses there.
In progress:
