It's official, I'm just plain old

Biology is now chemistry, ecology, etc. I've been watching the Berkley series to update myself on biology because nothing seemed to be going in. I'm a former nurse, had all this years ago and nothing, I do mean nothing is going in. The chemistry seems to be the big thing. All those formulas (and they mean absolutely nothing). Looking at the element chart, Huh!!!! hilarious hilarious Oh well, I'm up to class four, guess I'll just keep plugging along, maybe something will start gelling. Anyone have any better suggestions? I've got Biology Smart on the way, read CLEP REA book, have an old biology textbook that I've read about half of and decided to try this course. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to my world!

Just remember, for us old dogs it just takes longer and more hard work but it eventually soaks in.

Keep on plugging.

At 45 I didn't think my brain worked for anything except Mommy work! I like Cliff's Notes and Spark Charts, they just give you the important things so you don't get bogged down with other extra junk. I also like watching podcasts along with checking out various publishers websites for textbook companion info. Sometimes they have games to help you remember info and most have quizzes to help you test yourself to see if you really do remember more than you think. I find that happens a lot to me. I think I'm not remembering the info, but when I do the multiple choice quizzes or exams I find out the info is there, I just don't have the specific recall I would like. In other words I know it when I see it just don't ask me to regurgitate it on demand! LOL! The old brain still works, just in a different fashion than it used to! Keep plugging away, we can do this it just takes a different learning style. I'm a believer that your learning style changes as you get older and get more distractions. You can do this! Just try to find another method to get the info! You are not alone! Good Luck!

When I was born, there were only 48 states. I decided I wanted to do psychology in December 2008, should finish by July 2009 with a BS. Had to start from scratch. Brain and ticker are both doing well it seems. Age is definitely not a factor.

Big Grin I have been at this a long time and the only thing I can say is just keep working your brain it will learn. If you give up more brain cells will go to sleep and never wake up again. My muscles are a memory and my body surprises me at how old it is every time I see a mirror. I don't get a whole lot of physical exercise, but I do lots of exercise for the brain. I like word problems, Soduku and find the word type games. At this point in my life I think my brain is the most exercised part of me. I also believe it works, if you keep at it you will kick start your memory and things will come back and you will learn new things.

Consider yourself (and everyone else up here) to be fortunate. We are still able to learn new things despite (some of us) being past our 35 year old mental peak. Many of my friends are out of work and just sitting around waiting for something to happen, and can not manage to reinvent themselves. They are mentally trapped! We are all doing something about our futures!

After a certain age mnumonics and other learning techniques no longer work, and you need to try other things. One of the other techniques is called Loci, and it has to do with imagining a location for each item that you are trying to remember, or maybe a person that had some related characteristic. It seems to work for me, at least until I take the test. I just forgot what I wanted to say Smile

Keep at it, and best of luck!

Frankie, we start out sorta like grapes. We get stomped on and kicked around and voila, we're Chardonay. We are adaptable. Try light exercising before studying to awaken the brain cells. Strong French/Italian roast after the workout and you will be ready to rock and roll.

Well took the first Peterson today and got a 46 (hey that surprised me), thought it would be even lower than that. I'm just working the IC cards, keep reading the text and watching the Berkley biology lectures.

By the way, finally got my local cc to post everything I have so far and now they have finally agreed that at this point I have 35 credits. Beats the 5 they were giving me on March 17th. I can't wait until I get to 90 (where I was before all this started, but hey onward and upwards). Thanks for all the support.
