Iowa starts online state-wide public K-6 school

Wow. Homeschooling without the parent effort and involvement?

Iowa Launches Virtual Academy, an Online Public School | Education News

Ninja Edit

Online Virtual Academies are becoming more popular apparently. Never heard of them before. Here's an article specifically discussing the home school angle.

Quote:Students taking part in the free virtual academy still take their classes from home, but they are also considered members of the district and are eligible for things like a local high school diploma, he said.

Virtual school programs may be drawing students away from other forms of home schooling, some say.

"I've met some long-time home-schooling families that are so attracted to this that they've switched over," said Wyoming Virtual Academy parent Amy Threewitt. "I see more home-school families coming in. I think it has taken a couple of years for people to know that it's there."

That sounds awesome. So many parents make horrible teachers. So why not take advantage of online experts and curriculum.

Here's a quick HSLDA position page for anyone considering the option http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/Issues/C/...chools.asp

Without sounding like an infomercial, I'm a huge supporter of HSLDA for a lot of reasons, which I'd go into if asked. For that reason, we wouldn't use a program like this. HSLDA will not provide legal representation to families that do, so that's an easy decision.

Also, these kid's test scores...not good.

AND, my dear friend Ryoder, you know were friends, but how on earth can you say that? Seriously? Only 5% of the kids in this country are homeschooled, so that's a very tiny group of parents. Are you presuming MANY of THOSE parents are terrible teachers? Based on what? Seriously, and this is going to sound really crass, so forgive me, but 95% of parents send their children away to a building for school. In order to do anything differently involves a HUGE financial sacrifice as well as commitment. People tell me ALL THE TIME they wouldn't want to be around their kids all day.

I don't think you're going to see kids leaving school en mass to run home and be homeschooled this way.
