Interview ideas....
#11
Great advice so far! I don't have anything to add, interviews aren't my strong suit (lol). Sorry, I had to.

Seriously though, you're going to do great. You've been doing this job. You know what you're talking about and they know that. Dress to impress, no matter what day it is. If they ask you about it, tell them you made an executive decision and you stand by it. The win sheet is an awesome idea, and I would be surprised if they weren't already expecting one.

Best of luck, man. We're all rooting for you!

You could always wear the suit coat and then take it off immediately... Showing that you know that you're "supposed" to dress up for an interview, but getting rid of it right away to make everyone feel more comfortable. Just a thought..

In regards to the suit, you can bet that every other candidate is going to show up in a suit. I'd definitely wear the suit. I'd be afraid that not wearing the suit would be an indication that I wasn't taking the interview as serious as I should. However, I might mention, with a smile, that I feel more comfortable in just a shirt and tie, so that they know you're just wearing the suit as a sign of respect for the position.

In regards to the accomplishment sheet, I don't think it would hurt, but I imagine that you are going to be working these accomplishments into your interview answers anyway. Even if they don't ask the "right" questions, I'm sure you'll be working your accomplishments into the answers. If that is the case, would the extra sheet be too much?

At the end of the interview, most interviewers will ask if you have any questions for them. One of my favorite questions is to ask, "What is your expectation of the perfect candidate 3 months after they have been hired?" With you, they know exactly what they will be getting. Hiring someone new is always a big risk, but you have already proven that you can do the job and do it well (I presume). Just remind them of that fact.

T minus 60 minutes till show time.

I have put together a small professional dossier on myself, resume, some recent achievements, a couple of letters or reference, some writing samples, and a goals and objectives page. I had 8 copies of it bound up at fed-ex kinkos...I think its spiffy.

Decided to walk in with the gray herringbone jacket, I may pull it off and reference how the culture her is a bit more relaxed...we'll see. My boss found it funny and remarkable that i "dressed up on cool Friday", that's ok though, it should demonstrate a seriousness of purpose.

One of my best competitors is in there now, shook his hand and wished him luck.

Its over, I don't really know how it could have gone better. I feel really good about the process.

Two things stand out,

1. Burbuja had some fantastic input on resume presentation, I basically went in there and dropped a tabbed and bound booklet that included the resume itself, A past 12 months "highlights and accomplishments" page, a great recommendation letter that I termed "service recovery", there was a writing sample from a policy I've been working on, and then I ended with a one page Goals and Objectives sheet.....they were floored by the presentation! I'm so glad I posted this thread and Burbuja was kind enough to share some ideas with me. Home-run!

2. I wore the sport coat into both interviews and kinda made a joke about how that was the culture at other places but not really here...I then took it off and we got down to business. Glad I wore it and I think the way I discarded the jacket lightened the mood and set a great tone for the meeting.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out...thanks for everything!
