barcotta Wrote:(and please don't try to characterize this as a comparison between IC and MT--the comparison is between the overwhelming majority's knowledge and experience and your "opinion.") My experience is exactly as stated above. However, an honest portrait of Mother Theresa's life very easily takes down the halo that the popular concept of her creates. I will say nothing more, but allow everyone to do their own reading and draw their own conclusions.
Quote:They just didn't make broad, pejorative, unsupportable statements and call it their opinion.
I prefer concise, honest and experiential. The truth is that, yes, people on this board often make broad and unsupportable statements, that is the nature of an internet forum and every last one of us is guilty of it.
Quote:For those of you who are in love with textbooks--please go read your textbooks and leave the rest of us alone.
Then again, maybe my post was not about putting others down nor starting a flame war against people who use and like IC. I promise you, you do not have to worry about me slipping something in your drink and whisking you away to a faraway flashcardless cave... unless you want me to. You bring the Playstation, I bring the rum and coke. Deal?
Quote:In my opinion, textbooks have done more to unceremoniously crush every last ounce of the intellectual curiosity children are born with than any other educational tool to date.
The responsibility of those who make textbooks is not to make them fun, nor to tailor them to anyone's learning style, but to make them accurate, organized and informative. It is up to individuals, both students and teachers, to take the information and make it their own, practice intellectual curiosity, etc.
Quote:Does this response make you feel as though dissenting opinions are not tolerated or accepted on this board?
Yes. You did not simply disagree with what I wrote, you mocked me and degraded the value of my opinion. I did nothing of the sort to you nor anyone else.
Quote:If so, it shouldn't. I'm just offering my opinion of your opinion--something I know you would support.
Thanks for your opinion. Watch closely as I do not get offended by it. Maybe you can learn something from me
Quote:In any event, it is my opinion that IC is a fantastic tool that is priced right, delivered right and is a high-quality, supremely useful product that does EXACTLY what it claims to do.
I'm glad it worked for you. Congratulations on your success.

Kids play nice please I love everyone here - especially Maniac and let's not fight
This is truly one of the nicest place with the nicest people I've ever met - in person or virtually.
We all have different learning styles and I am discovering a lot about my own adult learning style Lindagerr - I think I probably have ADHD too as I'm discovering, so learning how to teach myself has been a whole new journey. Anyway.. the point is nothing will work for everyone here at every time. We all feel passionately about what has worked for us. I am no exception. I will preach IC to anyone who will listen.. because that has been my secret, but it may not be for everyone. My brother was surprised that I used supplements to IC and I was surprised that he didn't.
You get the idea.

Maniac Craniac Wrote:Also, if you use InstantCert only, ok fine, you will have just enough information on enough potential questions to pass your test, but you will not actually learn anything.
Conclusion: InstantCert is an auxiliary study tool, not a primary study tool. My advice for those who wish to use it is study first, and if you need some extra help, InstantCert probably isn't a bad way to go. If you want to save time and money, skip InstantCert altogether. While I believe this is exaggerated, it is true that starting with IC in a subject about which you know nothing can be a bit tedious. I fell in love with the audio because it makes it so much easier to get started.
InstantCert is not a hand-it-to-you-on-a-platter curriculum. It's more of a guide to what to study. At least, that's how I use it.
As far as IC teaching you nothing, that's quite up to you. If you take it at face value and do nothing but memorize the blanks, then yes, you've learned scarcely anything. If you use it to understand the concepts and motivate further research, then there's no denying that IC is teaching you something.

No, you didn't. However, what you did, in my opinion, was far uglier.
I was feeling a bit cantankerous when I came across your post and after reading your responses to (primarily) the tangential issues (textbooks, Mother Teresa, etc.) I realize that I wasnât concise enough. You wrote things in your original post that were blatantly untrue and inflammatory under the guise of a dissenting opinion. After re-reading my postâI regret that I responded in kind.
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the expression of a fair, objectively honest dissenting opinion of the IC product in this forum. There is everything wrong with making untrue, defamatory remarks (along with the suggestion of misleading advertising) on the forum of the product that is the object of your attack. In my opinion, that is disrespectful and unconscionable.
I donât believe I mocked or degraded you in responding to your statements. That certainly was not my intent as I would not want to do anything to distract from the true issue at hand, however, I do apologize for the sarcastic tone I employed at times as that clearly did serve as a distraction.
Iâve said all that I felt the need to say so the issue is closed as far as I am concerned. Thanks.

Let's try not to turn this very positive forum into degree info.com which in my opinion is full of people who log in every day trying to one up the other members in some sort of degree oriented sparring match. I can always tell a conversation has become pointless when people feel the need to quote another poster's text four or five times in a response. I don't go there anymore.
If you look at my advice it is usually completely opposite from barbuja's advice but hers is just as relevant and important as mine. It's simply my opinion of what worked for me and I don't take myself very seriously and neither should you.
Sometimes barbuja and I have the same point of view on something and I love it!
I they to keep an open mind and usually assume that other people are smarter than me or have a more well formed opinion so as long as I do that I can learn from them.

Give it a break please, this is not a facebook thingy, it's an educational forum where all of our members should be respectful and civil to one another. You have demonstrated a continued position as one who prefers to argue their point in an antagonistic manner and contribute very-very little to educational discussions. As a consequence you have been banned again now for a 7-day period.

I find this fascinating and a bit ironic, because he is a moderator on DegreeInfo.
I must say I much prefer this forum. Nothing against DegreeInfo, it just seems more focused on grad school and higher. And this one is more overtly encouraging. cheersmate

The FOCUS here is to assist others in earning college credit. In my opinion DI did MC a great disservice by installing him as a moderator. It was a very selfish decision. After a year and 3000+ posts he is not much closer to getting his BA. Many of his peers on this forum who utilized the tools from this forum have already graduated and moved on to their graduate degrees. If DI had said to him "Put your time and energy into finishing your BA", he would have his BA by now. That is the real tragedy here. You don't earn credit by talking about earning credit, you earn credit by buckling down and doing it. This forum helps you do that.

Instacert was probably the best resource that I've found. When I first started, I used the flash cards exclusively, along with some practice tests. The more I learned about testing, preparing for tests, and how to use IC, the more I found that it was safer to supplement IC with other resources. Its usually the harder exams, or exams that IC says to use other materials to supplement your study in preparation to take the exam. The specific feedback area is another treasure trove of information on each test. I also use free-clep-prep.com for extra practice tests and test info.
IC is a great deal, and they should keep it at its present price. I always recommend it to anyone that's interested in testing out on college credits. Thank you IC for providing this service to us.
Its to bad some people get riled up in the forum about the company that provides that forum (I just don't get that part).
For those of you at IC, this area probably just provided you with the cheapest feedback possible hilarious (you got deal on it you know ).
