Looking for other peoples input

Hello All,

I am checking to see what everyone else thinks about the Associates/Bachelors Degree Dilemma. Right now I am working towards my AAS in Accounting from a Local Community College. Right now I am not to far off from earning my AAS. However I recently took the English Comp Modular exam and only got a 51 on it. This will give me three credits at TESU but I need to wait for my school to grade my essay. If I don't get credit for English I at my CC, I am thinking about dropping my attempt for a degree with that school and just focusing on my Bachelors at TESU. My main reason for thinking this way and I already need to seek out credit for English II for TESU and I don't want to have to seek credit for English I if I don't get it from my CC. If I plan to try and stick out my AAS degree I wont finish until Fall of next year because of when the offer the classes. I plan on completing my Bachelors by the end of next year so I think it would be silly to finish my AAS and Bachelors almost at the same time. This goes without saying, if I do get credit for English I at my CC then I do plan on finishing my AAS because I will be able to finish by the end of Summer Semester at the latest.

What are your long term goals? Are you seeking CPA licensure? I wouldn't necessarily let one class determine where I attend and tend to think English is important enough to take as a class (if the material is not already known inside and out), but the bigger picture will probably make more sense to go ahead and go to TESU.

I decided an associates added no value for me because I would have finished at near the same time. This isn't always the case. A local community college may provide a local flavor to your resume that can make online-phobic employers a little more comfortable with your bachelors from a school they've never heard of.
Currently studying for: Still deciding.

However, like you said you decided against the two year degree because you would finish them so close together. Once again it all depends on how the essay goes. I won't get the results back from probably another two weeks. If HVCC will take the Straigterline courses I would do those for the 6 English credits. I do know the material very well but HVCC makes you handwrite essays and I hate doing that. That is the only reason I am worried about the credit for English I from them.

I personally don't see a lot of value in an AAS when you're going to finish your Bachelor's degree around the same time.

As someone who worked in HR, I saw people with degrees from schools I'd never heard of all the time. There are something like 2,500 colleges in the US, and I've probably heard of about 50 of them. That leaves 2,450 that I haven't heard of. We just checked to make sure it was RA, and that they actually had their degree. Even employers with more stringent standards (those that really dig the Ivies for instance, or ones that want to see your GPA or transcripts) still look at job experience over where you get your degree. An AA from a local CC carried almost ZERO weight if you had a 4-year degree. Zero. Like, no one cares.

Thanks dfecore, that's the kind of input I was looking for. I will prob just finish out spring semester at HVCC and that will be it. I might as well take it. I will get 17 credits for next to nothing. Pell Grant and NYS TAP pretty much cover everything except books.
