All of the doctoral courses start around 6:00 pm. I'm assuming traffic will be bad when I have to drive there, but it'll be alright when I go home as long as there aren't too many drunks driving between the cities. I won't be taking any Friday or Saturday courses anyway. Yes, in San Antonio, the drunk drivers come out as early as 9pm, and the courses end around that time. I'm thinking I'll just suffer with the commute two days a week until next school year. Since I missed the deadline to apply for an assistantship, I'll still have to work full-time, and finding work in the San Marcos area would be too much of a hassle. I also don't know where to begin to look for a house, duplex, or townhome to rent. Currently, I have a nice little backyard for my dog. Being a small town, San Marcos doesn't come up with many results when I search for rentals online.

Texas State is really growing. I don't know the rental market there but I would assume that it might be higher. I know that rentals are expensive in NB. The whole area from Buda on down the NB is really growing.

The San Marcos rental market is geared toward young college students. Many places even charge by the room. I don't want to live in a house with a bunch of 18-22 year olds. LOL.

Just saw this and wanted to chime in and say congratulations. You have provided tremendous support to many people here and I am very glad for your opportunity. I have been busy trying to "convert" others to this path and have gotten a few so far, and it is always nice to be able to tell them that this board is full of generous and supportive people.
I will say, however, I do not envy the commute. My wife and I were glad to see San Antonio traffic in the rear view mirror when we left...

Moving from Tampa to SA was a relief as far as traffic goes. Or at least it was 7-8 years ago.

I dropped out of the teacher certification program, and I'm about to drop out of the testing process for a police department. For the subjects I want to certify in, there are really only openings in the districts on the southern part of town. That would make commuting way north of SA more tiresome. The police department I was applying to probably wouldn't have hired me anyway. They don't have their own academy, so they have a preference for those already licensed as peace officers. If you're hired and not licensed, they put you through a regional academy. I'm pretty sure they have a preference for the full-time, 6-month academy which wouldn't have worked with my class schedule. I'm also pretty sure that I would be obligated to work with them for at least a year or pay back what they spent on training.
