I was accepted to a PhD program! - sanantone - 07-02-2013 I was accepted to Texas State University's PhD in Criminal Justice program. The program does have a tuition waiver and $26,000 stipend, which goes far in Texas, but I missed the application deadline for the graduate assistantship. I discovered this program at the last minute; and, luckily, I made it in time to apply. I'll just try for the assistantship next year. I'm so happy! I want to cry. I wanted to share this with all of you, not only because Instantcert and this forum were instrumental in me finally finishing my BA, but because I wanted this to serve as an inspiration for others. EC and TESC have become well-known for their flexible programs, and education snobs might laugh at you and tell you that no one will take your degrees seriously. I even had someone imply that those who attend unranked schools don't learn anything. Well, I learned enough to get into a regionally-ranked university! It's not Harvard, but it's good enough for me. Oh, and the stipend is almost unbeatable. Even the colleges that have $30,000 stipends are usually in areas with a high cost of living. Good to know you proved all the doubters wrong about the so called unranked schools! CONGRATS!!!!! I was accepted to a PhD program! - koenigtv - 07-03-2013 Congratulations. Sincerely happy for you. It's good for all of the doubters who lurk to see that yes, a degree from the Big 3 is a very valid (and cheap!) stepping stone to educational and career advancement. I love seeing success stories here!!!!! I was accepted to a PhD program! - sanantone - 07-03-2013 scryedrulz Wrote:A stipend is basically where they pay you right? Just clarifying. Either way that is great news!!!Do great and please keep us updated!!! Yes, it's when they pay you usually for a research or teaching assistantship. A full-time assistantship is 20 hours a week and for 9 months, so you're free to work some more or rest during the summer. Thank you all. It's going to be a bit of an adjustment for me to go from a place with 1.3 million people to one with less than 50,000, but Austin is just up the road. I'm only moving 40 minutes away, but the commute on I-35 can be awful. |
