Human Growth and Development
#1
I am studying for the Human Growth and Development Clep. How close is it to the Instantcert study guide? I have an REA study guide that just seems like overkill. Any suggestions? This will be my 1st clep and I am nervous.

I took it this past Monday . It is not easy ...there were a number of question that instantcert does not have in their flash card base. However, I did use instantcert as my only resource and still passed with a 56. Be careful..spend some extra time studying. i took it after two and a half days of studying.

I found that by taking these 4 exams in order, you find that each one piggybacks onto the next one with successive information.

Sociology
Psychology
Human Growth & Development
Educational Psychology

Instead of starting a new thread with the same heading thought I would just add on to the information already here. Hopefully, making it more helpful to anyone doing a keyword search on Human Growth in the future.Smile

Passed HG & Development yesterday with a 73. Yeah!!

There were probably 7 -8 questions on theories of development with about half of those focused on the cognitive theory. Learning theories came next in quantity, maybe 4 -5 questions.

Physical (biological) development was probably another 5 - 6 questions. The stages, nutrition, etc.

Language development was a surpisingly fair portion of the exam. Can't remember how many questions but it seems as though quite a few dealt with the stages of language and what is typical for different levels as well as the learning process itself.

People to know, as well as a basic understanding of their theories, would be Jean Piaget (lots!), Erik Erickson, Albert Bandura, Lawrence Kohlberg, Freud(some), Chomsky and Susan Carey (some.)

I found this subject so interesting that I ended up doing a fair amount of side reading on Piaget and Erikson which I am sure was a help. I am also following Shoto's advice in this thread and have taken Intro. Soc and Intro. Psych. However, I do think that this is passable with just IC and looking up some of the main people/points in Wikipedia.

I too passed this about a month ago with a score in the 70's. I just used IC to study. It was more than adequate in my opinion to pass this test.

I do have some traditional credits in beginning Psych, and Sociology, plus I teach, and have kids..some of it just stuck because it seemed like common sense. Like Librevore, I found the subject fascinating so that helped stuff stay with me.

I took Ed psych right after Human Growth and Development, and there was a LOT of overlap. It's a great way to use what you're studying now.

I am also studying for the Dantes Fundamentals of Counseling and I'm seeing overlap there as well.

Good luck! I know, as most of us know here, how scary that first step, that first exam can be! You'll do great, and it's going to be a very rewarding journey!
