How to get UL at EC for 2 depths with only DANTES & CLEP?
#1
Hopefully I can make this make sense, since I really need to be asleep right now...I have been trying to figure out which CLEP/DANTES tests I can take to finish my degree. I think I've figured out that even if I am not picky about which depths I chose, I cannot get enough upper level without some other form of testing. Which I guess leads me to GRE...in which case I would definitely lean toward the mathematics, but I don't think I could score high enough to get enough UL for a MAJOR. I cannot find a chart on how much UL could be awarded for the Math GRE, so I am not sure how much UL I might be able to earn. I pretty much am interested in all the CLEP/DANTES under Applied Professional. I'm not completely clear on all my discipline options. Here's my unofficial eval (from a while back):
Unofficial Summary - Bachelor of Science Liberal Studies (BSL)

Listed below are the requirements you still need to complete:

General Education (Arts & Sciences Requirement)
21.00 semester hours at the upper level

Depth Requirements
A depth in the Arts & Sciences

A second depth in any academic area, including applied
professional/electives

AND

Applied Professional Credit or Additional Arts & Sciences
33.00 semester hours lower level in any academic area
9.00 semester hours upper level in any academic area

Information Literacy Requirement
FYI, I can take CLEP/DANTES for free, but I do not have any type of tuition assistance beyond that. I am trying to finish a bachelor degree as inexpensively as possible.

Thanks for your help...I've spent hours and hours reading through posts on here, and I just haven't been able to figure it out on my own.

Login to your account and go to Publications. You'll find the Student Guide and Assessment Catalog. Everything you need is in there.

I have been through that pub, but it doesn't answer my questions on what scores yield what LL/UL credits. That's really the first thing I'm looking for.

You need to access Excelsior's Credit Catalog as well as Excelsior's Liberal Arts Catalog. You will find them under Publications on

www.excelsior.edu

In the Credit Catalog, there is a page (around 37 I think) that list all of the CLEP/DSST exams and their categories.

As far as the breakdown for the GRE...you will need to contact an advisor and ask them for that because I don't believe it's listed in the Liberal Arts catalog. They will be able to tell you how many credits they will award based on the score.

Hope this helps.

You would need to get in the 87 percentile on the GRE to get the 33 credits needed to cover the credits for a Math major at EC.

The first 12 credits given are lower level credits. The remaining 21 are upper level credits.

To get an idea of the breakdown, here's the Literature In English Chart that Alissa posted. (there's currently not an available chart that anyone seems to have for the math breakdown, but this should give you an idea of how it works. Also, remember Math needs 33 credits to get the major, while most of the other GRE'able majors only need 30.)

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Hi!

CLEP exams are not UL.

Some DANTES are UL.

What about ECE (Excelsior College Exams)? Some ECE are UL.

(The Student Guide to Credit by Exam shows which exams are UL.)

Also, you could get a depth in math by using ALEKS Intro to Stats for the UL credit.

I am considering a depth in history by using the Civil War DANTES for UL credit.

Thanks to everyone! I think I have enough info to start drafting out a preliminary plan.

I did email Excelsior to ask about the Math GRE breakdown. I will post if I get a response.

It was like pulling teeth to get just this little bit of information:

Mathematics Subject GRE :
55% - 12 LL & 3 UL
60% - 12 LL & 6 UL
80% - 12 LL & 18 UL
(easy enough to figure out the rest)

The admissions advisor I spoke with said that 30 credits was the max on the available credit via the subject GRE. Although I thought I had read here somewhere that with a higher score it IS possible to get the 33 credits?

Without doing the GRE, I had to take ECE exams to meet my UL requirements...

alissaroot Wrote:A Mathematics major at Excelsior is a little different, since 33 credits are required for that particular one. So, as is my habit to pester advisers, I sent an email asking what else would be required to major in Math, assuming one could score high enough on the GRE. Here's my reply:

Greetings, Alissa -

Thank you so much for your kind words and support of Excelsior College!

To answer your question, a student would need to score at least a 780 on the Mathematics GRE in order to earn the full 33 credits required for that major.

I hope this is helpful, but please let us know if you have any other questions about your degree program, or any other in the School of Liberal Arts.

I hope you enjoy a safe, peaceful and happy holiday!

Best wishes, Tamara R. Garrison, Academic Adviser

Hi! I have to satisfy my own curiosity about something. Someone I know is interested in the GRE Mathematics to test out of a major, after seeing my success with the GRE Psychology. That particular major seems to require 33 credits? If a person were to score high enough on the Math GRE, what would they need to do for those last three credits required? I am pretty much trying to convince everyone I know to enroll. Thank you for your time!
