The Civil War is one of my favorite time periods in history. I have taken US History 1 and 2 both as a class and as a CLEP test. Motives, theories, causes, etc, I feel pretty knowledgable about.
However, I failed my first test a couple weeks ago and now I'm kind of nervous.  How much study would those who have gone before recommend?

Which test are you preparing to take? It will make a difference on how much study time people will recommend.

It's the DSST Civil War and Reconstruction.
This is weird... I thought I had posted this on the Civil War thread, not started a new one. ???
Sorry about that... I must have been too tired from all the studying.

Civil war was my only failed exam....but civil war was not an area of interest, so I was starting from scratch. On the other hand, like you, I felt solid about theories-motives-causes, etc. This test, I thought, was super fact based. Which battle- where- when- who led it- who won- etc.

I studied for 4 weeks. Others mentioned needing at least 3 weeks.
I think a lot of Civil War buffs would be disappointed by how little coverage there is of the actual Civil War battles. I did not find it to be as fact-based as I had hoped. There was a lot of coverage of the politics surrounding the war; I had trouble on the Reconstruction questions. Be sure you cover the causes starting with the Missouri Compromise (1820).
It was a fair test for UL college credit.
I have not received my score yet.

Oh... well, thank you.
And thanks to everyone else for the advice. It seems that one had a lot of battles and the other not so much? I'm not big into battles and stuff, so the more politics, the better for me! (I'm fascinated by the causes and all the attempts to avert the Civil War). But I will be sure to brush up on the generals and battles too, just in case.
Anyway, I just scheduled the exam for Monday afternoon, which will give me some more time. I'm feeling very comfortable with the IC flashcards and I think after I review the thread in "specific exam feedback" I will be good to go. (Or so I hope!)

I would think that if you've already taken U.S. History I and II, you should have a good understanding of this period already. Study and knock this one out of the ballpark!

I thought so, too. After studying for both of these, I decided to add Civil War DANTES and American Government CLEP to my degree plan. I took Civil War last week and have studied for American Government for a week so far. I am glad that I took US History first. It has been a good step toward learning the next two, but they each require more learning than what the history study materials covered. I am pleased with how they have built on each other; it has made learning the new material much easier.
