How is Spanish at UMPI
#1
I started Spanish at Sophia, but then dropped the ball.  I've been flying through classes at UMPI so I'm just wondering if I should try and squeeze it into the upcoming term?

Thx!

Spanish is reported to be unlike other UMPI classes in that you can be penalized, and possibly fail, for having "exceptional" knowledge. Example: I believe one of the milestones or the main assignment is for you to write about your life. If your grandparents raised you, but the lessons don't teach you the words for "adopted" or "grandfather", you would get a failing grade for using a dictionary to look up the words not included in the course.

Skip it. You'll fly through Sophia so much easier. And there's no BS with Sophia about your knowledge being "too advanced" for the assignments.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I had heard that - my wife took it on Sophia. She's from Mexico, so it would have been no bueno to take at UMPI.

RUN! Don't take it at UMPI. Take it on Sophia. The professor is pretty weird. She's accused multiple students of cheating. She gives you dictionaries to use in the course and then accuses you of cheating when you use them. If you have any knowledge at all, she gives you a really hard time. There's an oral component to the Final Assessment at UMPI so if you have any issues with speaking this may be another reason to avoid it.

FWIW, the Sophia course also requires a speaking component. It's unlikely to be anywhere near as problematic as the UMPI course, though.

It can't be as bad because she nitpicks and complains about using words that weren't taught in the class, but you only learn like 50 words and have to an essay and a speech. 50 words isn't enough for the assignment. She's a total PITA. There were a few hours where I almost withdrew from UMPI and gave up on ever getting my bachelor's degree because of her. Everyone here knows how much I love UMPI, but she was horrible.

I took Sophia Spanish 1 and the professor that grades all the touchstones is cool. It was the same person every time for me. He gave good feedback. There are multiple oral components but it is literally just reading what you have written.

Reading what you have written is definitely different than UMPI. At UMPI it's a list of questions in Spanish which you have to answer in Spanish. The questions are written down in the instructions so you know what they are, but she asks things you don't learn in the class but then accuses you of cheating by using the dictionary she provided. One of the questions I had was what my parents jobs were. We did not cover this in the course so why it was a question, I don't know. She's an odd duck.

Sounds like UMPI Spanish would be harder than your Sophia.org Spanish experience, if you can salvage the Sophia.org Spanish course and try it again to finish the credit off, it may be worth a shot instead of jumping to UMPI, Study.com or whatever else (don't chose StraighterLine Spanish I, it's way too expensive).

You can always contact Sophia and have them restart a course.
