Any chance you qualify for a pell grant? If you fill out the federal financial aid form and TESC's form, they will automatically tell you- but a pell is around $4500 and will pay for all of your year at TESC. This includes enrollment fees and attending 6 credits per semester. If you take out a student loan (there is a subsidized loan for 5,500- you don't need both-resist the temptation! They will try to get you to take both loans, you have to formally decline it) that will come back to you as excess which you can use to pay for books, CLEPs, and local classes. This is exactly what I did. (am still doing).
Now, if you have an employee reimbursement program, simply set that money into a nice savings account or CD and then when you hit that payback time 6 months after graduation, you can send them one lump sum. (this is what my husband is doing)
Since I have no idea how financial aid works at EC, I can't help you there. Back when I started my search, EC didn't participate in financial aid programs, I have no idea what their status is now.
A quick final thought- you mentioned portfolios. I would suggest you really check this out before you decide- it costs as much as a class, is just as much or more work, and not a sure thing. I hear lots of horror stories about portfolios.

Jennifer, I don't qualify for pell grants but I do have employee tuition reimbursement($5250 a year) plus student loans. The only problem is my employer pays tuition based on the amount per credit hour(they pay up to $300 per credit hour) since TESC is not broken down in that manner, I don't know how to go about getting reimburse through my employer. I contacted TESC today any they just told me to speak with my employer that there must be a way to work it out. Rules are rules and I don't see my employer working this out. They must know how much the credits are per credit hour. Maybe EC would be the best option. I just want to be able to use those FEMA's without having to pay for them.

It is broken down, but for the Enrolled only.
It's $165 per credit for out of state students. I think it's $125/credit for in-state (NJ). That's for the Enrolled option. The Comprehensive doesn't break it down, other than it covers fees and tuition (36 credits' worth).

Well, Thomas Edison does have their TECEP. They cost $75 a credit hour. In many respects, they are remarkably similar to classes. Could you perhaps convince your employer to allow you to use yout tuition assitance by taking some TECEP?

They give you 2 choices, comprehensive and enrolled. You want enrolled. Comprehensive only makes sense if you are taking a full 12 credits each of the 4 semesters of your year. (You said part time which is 6) So, you pay the enrollment (student loan) and then per credit. You'll need 6 credits per semester for each of the 4 semesters to keep your loan. ($165/credit).
I swear, sometimes I think the people at TESC smoke crack. What did they tell you to work it out with your employer for???? Sigh. I think they are real employees, so we can't blame it on it maybe being a workstudy...... :confused:
Here is what I get:
Enrollment fee around $2000
6 credits with technology fee around $1000 x 4 = $4000
Credit your student loan $5500 and employee reimbursement $4000 leaves you $3500 to put toward books ($100/class +/-, figure $800) and CLEPs at around $80 +/- each. I estimate you can take about 30 CLEPs/DSSTs before you start digging into your own pocket.
I'd save the TECEPs for last ditch efforts- they are $500 each and you can't use financial aid!!!!! (I am taking one next week)

This might work. How would it show up? Would it be listed as a class or what would my invoice have on it?

Jennifer thank you so much. This makes sense to me. Maybe you need to help the admissions office out a bit. Maybe take calls from your home or something. They need all the help that they can get it looks like. I think I know now that this is what I want to do. Thank you so much.
