History of the US 1 & 2 vs. Western Civ 1 & 2

sconner001 Wrote:I just took History II on Monday and failed. My score was 48. I took 6 week of studying the flash cards and was scoring 80% and above on the flash cards.
I was unprepared for the amount of quotes that was given on the test. I expected quotes like 'I have a dream" with the questions pertaining to when and by whom this was made...however there were about 10 quotes that was totally unfamiliar to me and I never saw on the flash card. I have come to the conclusion that this test must be supplemented by the textbook...but that is my story.

You were so close to passing. I know this was a tough exam. It was not as fact-based as I expected either.

Don't forget that the flashcards are giving you an idea of the topics/subjects that will be covered on the exam. They do not know what you will be asked. Some people are able to study with just the flashcards for some subjects. Many of us supplement our studies with study guides for CLEP like REA (includes teaching material and practice tests), Peterson's practice tests, and other websites.

I hope you will have better results next time.

U.S. History I and II are easier than Western Civ. in my opinion. It's a much more contained subject--fewer countries, few centuries. Big Grin

Don't let U.S. History II scare you. Just be sure to study from a wide variety of resources. IC flashcards are excellent and should absolutely be used, but they are only one resource. Always use multiple resources for history CLEPs!!!!

You should read a thorough U.S. history book. I used this one:

Amazon.com: A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror (9781595230324): Larry Schweikart, Michael Allen: Books

I would also use the REA Guide and take all the practice tests, read and review the answers, and then take the tests again and see if you remember.

Here's a link to the REA books (you might be able to get these at your library):

Amazon.com: The CLEP History of the United States I w/CD (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (Test Preps) (9780878912728): The Staff of Research & Education Association: Books

Amazon.com: CLEP History of the United States II (1865 to the present): Research & Education Association: Books

Another great (free!) resource with practice quizzes is this one:

History Study Guides - SparkNotes

Google any person or topic you're not familiar with and study it extra. Makes notes as you go along. You'll pass with flying colors! I picked up a 75 on U.S. History I and a 65 on U.S. History II. Definitely doable, just study a wide variety of sources.

CLEP American government---70
CLEP US History 1---71
CLEP US History 2---58

I don't know if anyone looks at this thread anymore but I have to put my story on anyway.
I studied lightly for two weeks to get my score and was expecting a score of at least 65 because I'm a history buff (and because of my two prior scores above). Over half my test questions were about authors, books, philosophers, and even newspaper editors!! I thought I was taking history, NOT literature! It must have been a freak test or something so don't plan your studying only because of my story.

I'm currently studying for western civilization 1, it is a lot more material because of the much larger scope and time period. I'm taking the test on Wednesday and will post my score on this thread.
