Hi Everyone I have been gone for a while and don't know who is still around.
I came back for my niece she will be graduating high school this week and is going to go to Coastal Carolina University. She lives in Myrtle Beach SC so this is really an economic decision for her. There will be some state and county scholarships she can use and she can continue working. She is willing and interested in saving time and money by testing out of what she can. I did the research and CCU accepts most CLEP exams for 3-4 credits.
My questions;
1) how much have the CLEP changed in the last couple of years, are they updated, do the old study materials still help??
2) has anyone tried convincing a school that only takes CLEP to accept anything else?
3) Is there anything else I need to know that has changed in the last 2-3 years.
Thank you all for still being here, I never would have made it through with out the wonderful people on Degree Forum
Linda

CLEPs are now free through Modern States. That's the biggest change. They provide a voucher so that the exam registration is free, and then you can get reimbursed by check for the test center fee.

I've done 8 in the past 3 months all for free. seems like most of the tests have not changed much in many years.
Modern States is awesome!

There's a link floating around somewhere that shows the date the College Board last updated each test. Most of the tests haven't been updated since 2015, and a few are still from 2013. I suspect most of the updates were just minor tweaks.
It really helps to have access to the Exam Specific board and IC flashcards. The information on that board is well worth the $15 if you are doing more than a few CLEP tests.

Possibly inquire as to if they will also accept DSST courses.

Unfortunately, they won't.

I would like the reasoning behind offering DSSTs, but not accepting them. I don't see how they're much different from CLEP.

I would like the reasoning behind accepting CLEP's, but not DSST's. But it is what it is. In CA, the CSU system will accept CLEP's, but not DSST's. The CC will accept CLEP and DSST's, although the DSST's won't transfer to the CSU system. No clue why this is, makes no sense to me at all.

DSSTs are considered easier, at least some of them, and their retake policies were lax for a while. I think they tightened those up, but not a lot. I think it's like ACE. A lot of ACE are not easy to pass, but it still suffers from less acceptance.

I always thought DSST was considered harder than CLEP. History of the Soviet Union can't be considered easier than US History. Plus they are way more specific than CLEP.
I think CLEP is just known for Gen Ed's, they fit in neatly with a lot of college's Gen Ed requirements, so they are accepted. They are also created by College Board, the same company that does the AP and SAT exams, so they have some sway.

Those are probably factors too, but I believe most DSST are easier.
According to this page by Study.com, overall CLEP pass rate was 59% for military and 77% for civilians. That includes the easiest CLEPs and the hardest.
According to a post I found on this forum:
Soviet Union DSST (Civilian): 58 Passes, 4 Fails, 62 Test Takers, 93.55% Pass Rate
Soviet Union DSST (Military): 51 Passes, 18 Fails, 69 Test Takers, 73.91% Pass Rate
However, pass rate can be deceptive. Apparently a lot of the military people don't know the Vietnam war as well as they think they do? From the same post:
Vietnam War DSST (Civilian): 210 Passes, 33 Fails, 243 Test Takers, 86.42% Pass Rate
Vietnam War DSST (Military): 192 Passes, 287 Fails, 479 Test Takers, 40.08% Pass Rate
From what I recall, DSST has been redoing a lot of their exams (and making them harder).
I should have added these CLEP military pass rates for 2017:
History of United States II 997 363 634 36%
History of United States I 1,267 498 769 39%
Also another comparison for military pass rates for 2017:
CLEP Principles of Management 4,550 1,523 3,027 33%
DSST PRINCIPLES OF SUPERVISION 3564 3,447 96.72%
Based on the spreadsheets from the DOD site.
