Help with finishing on time
#1
Hello, I need some advice on the quickest methods of finishing my degree. My goal is for me to have my degree in hand by summer 2015. After that, if all goes well, I should be teaching English in Japan. I am going to apply at TESC to get a BA in business administration. By the end of this year I should have at least 70 credits. I would really like to get the rest done within the next year so that I have the first half of 2015 to prepare for when I leave. I just am not sure how to finish within a year.
At my local college the norm for a full time student is 12 credits in fall and 12 in spring, and the crazy people (like me) will do 12 in summer as well. So the most you can really get in a year is 36 credits.
How does TESC arrange their classes over the year? How many credits can one feasibly get in a year? Can I test out of some of the other classes I need?
I would really appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Here is a breakdown of my credits so far:
CLEP:
Biology 6
American National Government 3
Human Growth and Development 3
College Algebra 3

Pennfoster:
Technical Writing 3

Classes:
Intro to Computers 3
Pre Algebra 4*
General Biology 4
Fund of Speech Communication 3
Freshman English I 3
Beginning Algebra 4*
General Psychology 3
General Sociology 3
Freshman English II 3
Humanities II 3
Intermediate Algebra 3

Total credits so far: 46*

* I didn’t include these lower level classes in the total. Does TESC take these?

Assuming I take and pass Brigham Young University Japanese language test: +12 credits
Assuming I take and pass Principles of Management and Principles of Marketing CLEPs +6 credits
Also assuming I take 4 classes at my local college this fall: +12 credits

End of year total: 76 Credits

I'll let someone with a BSBA background answer most of your questions but will answer a few of the other questions:

-TESC will accept Intermediate Algebra and above. Your courses that you starred are as you said to introductory to be accepted (Pre and Beginning Algebra).

-TESC courses are laid out as 12 week courses and full-time is recommended as being six credits for four semesters (one year) instead of what most others schools have as two semesters at 12 credits and Summer courses added to that. They start courses each month of the year and offer them mainly as online or guided study format (which are both online). Someone else can answer your BSBA specific test out questions but for that normal BS in Business Admin you should be able to test out or complete other coursework for most or even all of the remaining courses.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

At colleges on the traditional semester system with 16-week terms, it's normal for students to take 12-15 credits during the fall and spring semesters. For those that have summer semesters too, it's normal to take 6 credits during those. So, 36 credits in one year at TESC should be doable. As Cooperalex said, TESC has 12-week terms and classes start everyone month. It shouldn't be unreasonable for you to take 3 courses per 12 weeks for 4 terms making that 36 credits. However, you can completely test out of the BSBA in General Management.

As Cooperalex said, pre-algebra and beginning algebra will not be accepted. General Biology will more than likely overlap with CLEP biology. You might get a lab credit out of the general biology course, though. The Biology CLEP will give you credit for Biology I and II and it looks like your General Biology course is the equivalent of Biology I. Unless you apply before July 1st, it's hard to say where your credits will land since the general education requirements are changing.

Am I missing something? Are you committed to taking courses to reach your degree? You can go as fast or as slow as you want taking CLEP and DSST exams. Also, TESC accepts courses from Penn Foster. (While it's a nationally - as opposed to a regionally - accredited college, TESC is unusual in that it accepts many of its courses. The courses must be ACE approved.) Again, you can go as fast or as slow as you want with Penn Foster. (Okay, not as slow as you want. You have 3 mos. to complete a course.) TESC also has...TECEP exams. If I understand it correctly, you have three months to pass the test.

You might want to apply (apply, not enroll) at TESC. TESC will review your transcripts and tests, and let you know how each course is evaluated. There is even a tool for accepted applicants that allows you to see how your courses fall into different majors.

Good luck.

Is there a max on how many credits TESC will accept from PF?

I am going that route and hoping to take alot of the classes for BSBA in Computers from TESC. I think you should look at PF before spending the money at TESC. Especially if there is not limit on PF transfers.

No, you're not missing anything. I was just unaware that you could test out of all of the upper level classes.
@sanantone That is very interesting news... I thought you could only test out of some of the general ed requirements for a given degree. Thank you for providing a comprehensive list of the tests I'll need to take.

The funny thing about the biology is that my local community college said the biology CLEP is only worth 3 credits, but those 3 credits counted for the intro to biology and not biology I. So thats why after I passed the biology I class I took the CLEP.

I didn't include all of the general education requirements for the BSBA because there are a ton of options and some of the general education requirements will be changing soon.
