Help returning to higher education.
#1
Hello reader,
Firstly, it took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out how to start a new thread( I hadn't activated my account yet). Now that I can finally post I wanted your esteemed opinion choosing a university and a degree. I have only been researching and lurking around this forum for a couple of months so I could really benefit from your experience and knowledge.
I live in the UK, 33 years old, I dropped out of university 10 years ago due to financial issues and honestly I wasn't enjoying university life so I wasn't too pissed when I had to leave. After dropping out I got a job as an entry level IT technician and worked my way up for the past 10 years. I am now being considered for a position as technical program manager at our new site opening in August this year. I am favoured for this position but unfortunately the offer is not yet official as I do not have a degree. I am hoping to get an IT or even business degree in order to get this promotion. I was informed about TESU from someone at work so I looked into it. However I was told I needed to get my transcript evaluated ( to match US credit format) which took longer than I expected because they want official transcript from university and I dropped out 10 years ago. I finally got my evaluation on the 02/01 ( 88 US semester hour credits) and I need a little help deciding what university or college to go with. WGU would've been ideal but they don't accept international students (unless anyone knows of a work around). I'll list the universities I'm aware of and am considering; Walden university, Excelsior college ( although I've recently heard some negative reviews), South texas college, NAU  UMPI  TESU. With UMPI and TESU I've missed the deadline and would have to edit this may to start and that seems to be cutting it a little to close. The flat rate/ subscription thing offered by some colleges makes them more attractive to me. NAU has a great CIT program but I can only transfer un 64 credits and I don't know if I can finish 56 credit in 4-6 months. UMPI's BLS MIS is great and the accepted my 12sophia credits but missed the 28 of Feb deadline for my university transcript I sent multiple emails and spoke with a few people but the next possible start date is May and I don't know if I can finish 30 credits in 8 weeks. I don't know enough about STC apart from the fact that they also have a flat rate tuition and a nice IT program. Walden is great too but it's a for profit college and I'm worried it will be seen as purchased degree.
I've rambled on enough some major points,
1. I have 100 credits
2. I read business degrees are easier, I would prefer IT can do computer science I have plenty of programming experience.
3. I need to start by April latest ( I will request aleyyer from the university with my current transcript and enrolled classes to show I will complete my degree by August in order to receive an official offer)
4. I also don't need my diploma, certificate whatever its called in August just a conferred degree to show I am a graduate.
5. I only have £3k in savings about 4k$ and I can borrow some money if need be but I don't want to spend more than 5k.
I appreciate any information who takes the time to read this long mess and to help me in my endeavour. Degrees are becoming more an more important compared to 10 years ago. It would be very nice to not be passed up on a position despite all my years of experience simply because I haven't completed a degree.
Now I can't find the post button ??

With UMPI there's always a deadline coming up. There are 6 sessions a year. This is the time to get your ducks in a row and complete the courses you need to get down to roughly 10 courses at UMPI.

Just saying you have 100 credits doesn't mean anything. You need to share what those credits are then we can help you with a degree plan. Who evaluated your UK credits?

WES I have sent them to UMPI I'll update you in what they keep and what I need. But the next start date is May and I don't know that I can complete 10 classes in 8 weeks. I have paid leave I can take about 4-5 weeks I'll need approval.

Yeah UMPI might be your best bet.

TESU could be an option. If you are willing to have your degree conferred by very beginning of September: https://www.tesu.edu/current-students/gr...nformation

However, the actual degree would be complete well before September. You could probably pull up online audits or something to show you completed all the requirements but the degree wouldn't be official until September.

There the small issue of the residency fee when it comes to TESU , I read that I can avoid that by taking 16 credits however I don't have the time to take 16 credits over 2 terms and as I am I new student they won't let me do it all in 1 term.
I'm gnna start an illumination process.
So far UMPI seems to be the favourite has anyone ever done all 30 credits in 8 weeks and is willing to share their game plan.
What of Walden, NAU and STC

How does the enrollment work. If the next possible start for UMPI is May am I still a student at that university, can I register for classes April-ish so I have a record showing I am in university and soon to graduate type of thing? Like an unofficial transcript to show what I've completed and what I am currently taking?

You'd enroll in classes in April but they won't be on a transcript until the term begins at the earliest. It won't say how long until you graduate.

There have been a handful of people who've completed their UMPI degree in 1 term. You need to post your evaluation so we can see what courses you will still need at UMPI. You also need to select a degree program. You said you have 100 credits but that doesn't tell us anything. They may not be the right credits.

As far as TESU goes, this is not true. You take all 16 credits in a single term, not two. 16 credits is the maximum that a new student can take at once at TESU. You would need to have 100+ transferred credits AND the majority of your UL credits completed to start your 16 credit term.

As for UMPI, that'll be cheaper and faster (depending on certain conditions):
1. You will need a science with a lab. Biology 101L from Study.com is currently the fastest/easiest way for most students to complete this requirement, though some students might prefer Chemistry 111L.
2. Did you take any foreign language A levels? If not, you would need Spanish I from InstantCert.
3. Most importantly, how are you at writing papers? Not everyone is able to knock out a paper in a few hours. If you can't churn out academic papers in a day or two, you're not going to be able to get a UMPI degree very quickly.

Yes, some people have completed a UMPI degree in just 8 weeks. I think one student just finished doing 12 classes in 8 weeks? It's not necessarily easy, but it can be done.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I have a chemistry class with labs worth 6 credits would this work? I have no language except fro gcse's I doubt thos count for credit. Just this September I wrote a 2000 word report in 2 hours after I left it for last minute. Honestly writing isn't my strongest skill. Is there anyway I can see the assignments so i can pregame and plan for them. Is the assigned work the same every year. Also if I choose to do the BLS MIS are all the required classes for the minor available at the same time. I read somewhere that some classes are offered term 1 and others term 2.

The chem class with a lab may work. Depends on the WES evaluation. You will need a foreign language.

There is no access the assignments prior to enrolling in the courses at UMPI. The classes and assignments do change. There have been changes to UMPI's YourPace schedule recently. You'd have to check with your academic advisor if all of the classes will be available in every session. They have not in the past, but they are changing this. It hasn't impacted all courses yet.

TESU tuition would be around $5000 for the flat rate and then another $1,000 for the alt credits. You would need 100 credits added to your degree plan by May 1st to start the capstone to graduate by September. I don't think you can make that deadline.

UMPI you should be able to do in one or two terms. You should be able to start in May if you hurry up and get the credits you need.
