I have not taken American Lit, but I loved Humanities. If you have a wide base of art knowledge (poetry, music, literature, and painting especially), preparing for the Humanity exam should be easy. If not, it may be best to take American Lit and work up to Humanities. Humanities is overwhelming at first, but once you start to take some practice tests, you begin to realize that it's not that bad. My love of classical music helped me greatly on the exam: I hardly studied music at all and that was my strong suit during the real thing.
I can vouch for the excellence of IC's Humanities sections. The specific exam feedback section on the forum is also very fine.

I've taken american lit but not humanities (I took it as a class.) The American Lit test was harder than I anticipated. If you do take it, be sure to get the Idiot's Guide to American Literature. Read all of it - and pay particular attention to the women author's and the major players. You will also have to do some interpretation of passages.
I can't recommend which one you should take since I've only taken one of the tests you mentioned, but wanted to give you some feedback. Hope it helps.

Well, I took ENGLISH Lit and Humanities. Again, not exactly what you're looking for, eh?
But based on those, English Lit was definitely better than Humanities. Humanities is extremely broad and covers a lot of information (including American Lit). So if you want something more narrow, you might try American Lit.
