Happy birthday America. I love this country. Thanks to all the brave men and women who fought for our freedoms from 1776 to the present.

Happy Birthday America! In addition to a warm thanks to the men and women who are serving our country in the military, I'd like to thank the men and women who helped those of us affected by the recent Derecho winds. The first responders were out helping, of course, but utility folks from around the country and even Canada* have come to get service to hundreds of thousands of folks as quickly as possible. Some stores were giving out free ice. Someone (the local departments of transporation?) made sure that intersections were cordoned off in such a way as to make driving safer. Folks who, on a good day, I wouldn't have thought knew how to handle a four-way stop intersection with signs, were behaving themselves VERY well at major intersections with lights that had gone out. I'm grateful to be an American.
* You know you are a good neighbor when you come from the cool and comfortable north, to an area with humidty over 70% and temperatures in the 90s.
