HELP-Anyone have study notes - DSST-Civl War?
#1
I am taking DSST civi my war exam - possibly tommorow and have created my own study guide but having a hard time remembering everything. Does anyone have any notes they prepared for this exam that you can share with me?

I may have to reschedule as I am really nervous, total study time only 8hours so far.

Took this on April 8th Electronically. Score 56
I used the DSST study guide from Finish College Fast (FCF) to supplement. The only error in that guide was that it got Fredericksburgs dated mixed up and listed as fort sumpter which opened the Civil War in 1861. IC was my lead on this one. Took the practice test from FCF and that helped greatly too. IC might be enough but I wasnt sure so added FCF

I thought the test was hard but it was over 100 questions I believe (electronic). Just answer best you can. The IC cards are actually more detailed then FCF Study guide but somehow they covered slightly different info and that helped.

I only got a 56 on this exam. needed a 46 so thats what I would recommend. And read all of the explanations in IC. You will probably run into to something where you know full well a general wasn't even in the battle the question asks because you read and understood the IC explanation
Cool

This was only my third test (and first DSST) so I’m not very good at deciding when I know enough to pass, yet. Plus, personally, I like to study long enough (4 weeks) and know that I will pass without a problem; it’s just a matter of what score I’ll get.

I was surprised to read that several people on the board thought it required several weeks of study, which seems unusual for this group.

The exam was not as fact-based as I had hoped. Since it was a paper-based DSST, I don’t know if I passed (how well I guessed!), yet.

My school (Excelsior) gives a grade for this exam so I wanted to do well.

You can download the sparknotes for this test from amazon for $10 or so. Since it prints out to about 40 pages, you may want to consider buying the hard copy of the notes.

Thanks everyone, I rescheduled for another week to allow a little more time to study all these generals and dates. Does anyone remember if there were alot of dates to remember on the test? I can't seem to keep them all straight.

It helped me to learn the dates so that I had a better idea of the order of events and how they related to each other, but knowing dates was not on my test. I also thought I might need to know the number of casualties and troops at each battle, but that wasn’t on the test either. It just had the total numbers for the whole war.

You do need to know the second level of generals that made a difference in the battles, not just the main generals.

There were more battles on my test than what was listed on the fact sheet, but they had been covered in my study materials.

There were a couple of questions from the fact sheet on my test.

Be sure you understand the politics leading to the war, during the war, and during Reconstruction. The Reconstruction SparkNotes was very good, but I still didn’t have enough depth on the consequences of the different reconstruction plans. Maybe Wikipedia has more.

Another week of study should help you a lot.

Thank you everyone who replied. To keep things in perspective, I am using a site posted below. My nieghbors daughter used it, and she is in the 3rd grade, it sure helps put things in the ole memory bank.

I needed this subject broken down to the simplest level and I mean simple so I can remember key elements of the war.

Study regime:
Here is the link -
The Civil War for Kids

Link to remember who was who, what, when and where?
Great American History Outline of the Civil War-

Link to quizzes:
Great American History Civil War Quizzes -
Link to answers:

THis is my current study plan along exam feedback and IC. I sit for this exam on Thursday, and I apologize if using these tools offends anyone.

This is another website that I found with lots of quizzes:

Quizzes to Test Yourself

The questions are not as deep as what is on the test, but it will help you get the basics memorized.

Also the Ken Burns Civil War videos have a supplementary website:
