Dantes is instituting a pilot program where they are going to pay for the registration fees at National Testing Centers for the next year. If you're like me and your Education Services Officer is no longer allowed to administer the CLEP exams this will be a good way to save the 20-50$ fee's that we're paying to register just to sit at a University computer terminal.. I attached a copy of the newsletter for your use which is also available on the DoD Dantes website located here. Enjoy!

If you are a military member, I would recommend always checking with your local test center in regards to the fees you might be charged. Our test center has had a policy for the past year that we waive our administration fee for active duty military members (not for the other DANTES-funded candidates).
In regards to the pilot program, from what I have heard, this will only apply to CLEP exams (not DSST) as they are doing away with the paper/pencil versions at the end of the year on all bases. The administration/registration fee will be waived for ALL DANTES-funded candidates.
Our test center is a small one and we would love to see more military testing candidates make use of our facility! Located in downtown Santa Ana, CA.

This is great news, thanks for posting. I had no idea they were ending the paper exams and forcing us to go off-base, but I learn it and at the same time learn that DANTES is doing the right thing and covering the fees. Awesome.
I wonder about future years though -- will "free" tests soon be a thing of the past for our troops? Budgets are cut to the bone and bennies are on the chopping block.

Dcan, I can understand your concern over the continued cuts to the military budget. I have a hard time believing they would get to the point where the exam fees would not be covered for at least active-duty military candidates. Maybe the reserve and guard units will get to the point where they are not DANTES-funded. Plus there is also the group of DOD Acquisition Workforce Personnel who are currently in the DANTES-funded group too.
I did want to point out that I don't believe the discontinuation of the paper/pencil CLEP exams will necessarily force all military candidates off their base. If there is already a "satellite" university test center on base offering the computer-based CLEP exams, the candidates can still use that site. I believe this pilot program was started because CLEP realized there simply wouldn't be enough of these satellite centers to handle the demand once the paper tests were gone.
Our test center has always been open to military candidates taking their CLEP or DSST exams here (no admin fee charged for active duty), but the few military bases in our area are already pretty well covered by these MOU sites. I am definitely hoping to see more military members walk through our doors!

I'm at a pretty remote duty station and have to travel an hour to get to my NTC. Word down the grapevine is that all protors who aren't adminstering 20-30 CLEPs/DSSTs per month are going to get the ax. All rumint though so that remains to be seen, fact is that paper based is going away so if you don't have to facilities to do the CBT's you're going to be driving.
