Good Alternative for Operations Management better than CSU Pueblo
#1
Hello guys,

I wanted to comment about a great alternative I found for the Operations Management requirement at EC.

The course is called Operations Management for Organizational Success offered by Wichita Area Technical College (watc.edu)

It is an 8 week class and does not involve math calculations until the last part of the course (the last 4 chapter or the last 2 weeks).

It has a Midterm and a Final Exam both multiple choice. Midterm has 55 questions and Final has 80 questions, open book and unproctored. Reminded me a lot of Straighterline.

If you read the material and make a copy of the glossary in the back of the book you should do fine on your tests. Doing that left me with enough free time to look in the book for the answers I didn't know and I scored 91 in the midterm and 90 in the final.

The final is more difficult and there were several questions on Constraint Theory so make sure you study that well.

There is also something really cool: You have 2 attempts for each test, so if you don't get the score you want, you have a 2nd chance.

There are 6 written papers called "abstracts", they are 2-3 page reviews of Operation Management articles that you choose freely and comment on the impact of them on you and how would you apply them. Pretty easy to do. I was done with them in less than 2 hours.

There are 4 videos to watch average 12 minutes long, mostly of manufacturing plants and each video comes with a set of questions to answer (3 to 5). Answers are straight from the videos, you should be done with these in about an hour or so.

There are 2 application exercises which is the late part of the class, when you have to use math to solve production/operation problems. A bit more challenging but not super difficult.

Finally, there are 6 discussion boards, you are required to post an initial post and do 3 replies to your classmates. They are pretty simple, should not take more than 30 mins to do a decent post and reply to 3 classmates.

The cost of the class was $410 including fees. However for non-residents the price is a bit higher but it depends on the state and the difference is not huge, I think 15% more.

You should not have a problem getting a solid B in the class following my directions, if you want an A make sure you have read the material well so you can get a high grade on the exams.

The teacher was very experienced as she worked many years in manufacturing for Boeing, if you have a question she will have the answers, she is a very valuable resource. High school students from Kansas get to take the class free of charge

I hope this helps many of you get Operations Management out of the way much faster.

Best wishes to all!

Is this upper level credit?

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Sounds like a good option. CSU-Pueblo has this as well, self paced, rolling admissions, listed as a 300 level class, costs about $445.00 Management > Division of Continuing Education > Colorado State University-Pueblo

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Since it is not from a 4 year college it is a lower level class, however it fulfills the requirement at EC. and it is RA credit. In my personal opinion much less time consuming and stress consuming than the CSU class.

The workload for the CSU class is gigantic compared to this one. I think it is a more down to earth and practical approach to Operations Management... my wife has noticed it I go to a restaurant and I observe the way they handle operations the time it takes for serve the food, the standardization of the processes... definitely for me a much better deal than the CSU class and the book with the DVD (required) was only 11 bucks on Amazon including shipping.

Since I am not a COSC or TESC student I am unable to tell you about them. IF you are fast you can navigate the modules faster than the 8 weeks (very doable), completing the written assignments and tests, however you would have to wait for the other students to post on the discussion forums.

Plus a key difference between the teachers of the CSU class vs WATC is that the lady of WATC is full of real life experience, that is her job, while the guy from CSU bases his class in theory and is a full time professor you can tell from the go.

The TESC exam cost was lowered. It is $34/credit hour in-state and $36/credit hour out-of-state.
You need a proctor and it takes 4 weeks for the results to come in. I still prefer the flexibility of an exam over an online class.
We'll see how it goes!

The CSU course is UL...these all sound like viable alternatives, depending on your wants/needs.
