Help with BALS General Management Concentration or alternatives
#1
Hello all,

First, many thanks to all the kind people on this forum for so generously spending your time and energy helping others.  I would never even have considered finishing my degree as a possibility without this resource.  You guys should be proud of the difference you're making in people's lives.

I originally found this forum in 2015, applied and got an evaluation from TESU (TESC at the time), worked out a degree plan, completed some free credits and then life got in the way.  I am back and determined to complete my degree.  It seems my timing is not the best as many changes have happened; the degree I applied for is no longer offered, a few loopholes keeping expenses down expired/are expiring and many credit options have gone away.  Much of the copious information I gathered is now incorrect as well.  I am using all of that as motivation to finish promptly this time.

I don't need a degree for my current position however there are several lateral and superior positions that I am qualified for through experience but can't be considered for without a bachelor's degree.  While the subject of the degree doesn't really matter there would be significant utility in having 'management'  listed on there somewhere.  The BALS with a General Management concentration would be perfect however I'm not sure it's possible to find all the credits needed.  I'm not able to do traditional scheduled courses due to work commitments but all other options are on the table.

Is there a way to complete the General Management concentration?   This is what I have found so far:

MAN-301 Principles of Management - Saylor BUS201*
MAN-415 Change Management - ??
NEG-401 Negotiations and Conflict Management - TECEP (would prefer another method but will do TECEP if necessary)
PSY-360 Organizational Theory - ?? Would Straighterline's Organizational Behavior work here?
PSY-363 Industrial Physchology - BUS323 from Study.com
MAN-373 Managerial Communication - Saylor BUS210*

*I just read that these courses will no longer be ACE certified after this month.  Assuming they work for the concentration, is it in the realm of possibility to complete them with Saylor by the deadline if I started now?  I'm a fairly quick study but I'm also a bit rusty.

I would also appreciate any alternative suggestions that might work better with the credits I have and the options available.  The BSBA in General Management could be an option however I'm worried about being able to complete the math requirements. (In community college I tested into remedial math, got a C in Basic Arithmetic and an A in Intermediate Algebra so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.)  The BSPS could be useful for me if I could get the paralegal/law concentration but I'm not sure how to go about finding credits that would work for that requirement.  Without the concentration I don't think any employers are going to be familiar enough with it that it would have any advantage over a general BALS.  In the end a degree I actually get is superior to any theoretical management degree so if a different option makes it more likely for me to graduate I'll take it.

Because I've seen this asked a couple times, I don't have kids and am on hiatus from volunteering but I do work full time and overtime is unpredictable and mandatory.  Things are not busy now but I could be working 70-hour weeks next month.  Unless my industry has a sustained boom the overtime periods should be sporadic and only delay and not derail my studies but it does make it difficult to plan as I never know how much free time I might have.

These are my community college transfer credits with the TESU course equivalencies that they gave me in my old evaluation:

ENC-101 Freshman English 3
ENC-102 Freshman English 3
COM-130 Intro to Human Communication (approved for oral communication under Gen Ed) 3

BUS-199 Call Center Sales Training 2
BUS-199 Computer Sales Industry 2

Not yet evaluated but on my ACE Transcript:

My sincere thanks in advance for any help!

There are plenty of options for you that are no-to-low cost, so I wouldn't worry about that.  As many courses as go away, some new options come to take their place.

Not ALL Saylor courses are losing ACE-recommendation - only 6 are ACP only, and those are probably going to switch to ACE.  But your courses aren't on the chopping block.

Here's a spreadsheet that should help.  The yellow stuff is free.  The blue is what you've completed.

Thank you kindly, that is very helpful!

Am I correct in thinking that I could get an ASNSM in Biology at the same time without taking any extra classes if I could pass College Algebra and use that and the other requirements in the BA electives?  Or is the quantitative literacy requirement different for that degree?

No clue on the requirements of the ASNSM, but yes, you can get an AA and a BA at the same time.

Can you help me understand the Study.com equivalencies listed on the spreadsheet?  It has Study.com as a source for all of the General Management requirements but I can't find any of them listed in the TESU equivalency guide here.  Does that mean that they're not accepted by TESU for those courses?

My main question is whether it's possible to get all the credits required for the General Management concentration without having to take them as classes with TESU.  I haven't been able to find equivalencies for these three:

MAN-415 Change Management
PSY-360 Organizational Theory
PSY-363 Industrial Psychology

TESU hasn't updated the page on Study.com's website - but what I have is what people here have reported as the courses coming into TESU as per an eval.

You can always get the courses pre-approved by TESU if you're enrolled.

Ah, I see.  Thank you again!  I plan to enroll again soon, at this point I'm just trying to get oriented enough to figure out which degree makes the most sense.

Just an update for anyone interested.  I applied to TESU and asked for the Study.com courses to be pre-approved for the General Management area of study.  They would only approve BUS323 Organizational Theory for TESU PSY-360. They said PSY 304 Industrial/Organizational Psychology will transfer as PSY-401 Industrial/Organizational Psychology but will NOT satisfy the Industrial/Organizational Psychology PSY-363 area of study requirement and instead applies only to the liberal studies area of study.  They said they would not accept BUS 304 Leading Organizational Change, BUS 319 Negotiations or Conflict Management, and BUS 324 Managerial Communications for credit at all.  Those three courses are recommended for NCCRS credit so I have asked them why they wouldn't count towards the degree even if they don't count towards the area of study.

Long story short, you can only use one Study.com course towards the General Management area of study.  I haven't been able to find alternative credits for the Industrial Psychology or Change Management courses so it looks like the General Management concentration is not going to be viable for me.

Your posts keep referencing your original 2015 TESC evaluation, many things have changed with TESU since then (besides the name change).  Have you had them do an official evaluation for the BALS-General Management concentration for you yet?  They won't put anything in it proper place until you have that official evaluation completed.   Before you do that what was your original evaluation in - what degree program?  Have you been activly enrolled all this time and are currently still locked into that catalog of 2015 still?

Edit: and looking at your existing credits it does appear you would have what you need for the ASNSM in Biology if you get College Algebra completed.

When I originally posted last month I had not yet re-applied to TESU so they referred to my original 2015 evaluation.  I have since re-applied and gotten a new academic evaluation as suggested so my post today was in reference to the new evaluation.

My previous official evaluation was in Bachelor of Arts - Social Sciences which is no longer offered.

I have not been actively enrolled since 2015.  I re-enrolled in March 2018.

I had a new official evaluation for the BALS-General Management concentration done in April 2018.  I then emailed Academic Advising specifically requesting that the study.com courses suggested in the spreadsheet be approved for the General Management area of study.  Their response was as follows:

"Organizational Theory from Study.com will transfer in as PSY-360, Organizational Theory. This course is recommended for credit until August 31, 2020. This course will apply toward your Organizational Theory Requirement.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Study.com will transfer in as PSY-401, Industrial/Organizational Psychology. This course will apply toward your Liberal Studies Area of Study.

Leading Organizational Change, Negotiations and Conflict Management, and Managerial Communication are not recommended for credit so they would not be able to apply toward your degree program. Please see the link below regarding courses that are currently recommended for credit:

https://study.com/directory/school/Thoma...ransferTab"

They placed Organizational Theory in the General Management area of study and Industrial/Organizational Psychology in the liberal studies area of study in my degree plan.  They did not place the others as they're currently saying those aren't accepted for credit.
