Undergraduate Accounting Certificate at TESC
#1
Hi, all! Long time, no see!

I'm doing some research on the undergraduate accounting certificate from TESC. Does anyone have experience with that? Cheapest and fastest? Easiest? What can be tested out of? What can't? I've only just started looking into it, so any info will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

You can only test out of financial accounting using CLEP, DSST, or ECE and managerial accounting using ECE unless there's an Ohio University exam I'm forgetting. Through Straighterline, you can complete financial accounting (accounting I), managerial accounting (accounting II), and cost accounting (what Straighterline calls managerial accounting). Penn Foster offers some intermediate accounting courses. They may or may not be ACE-approved right now. There's a TECEP for federal income taxation. LSU offered some accounting courses the last time I checked.

Actually there's also TECEPs for Financial and Managerial ACCT in addition to the Federal Income Taxation. www2.tesc.edu/listalltecep.php

You can take Cost Accounting with StraighterLine, but it's called Managerial Accounting there. SL's ACCT 1 = Financial Acct. SL's ACCT 2 = Managerial ACCT. and SL's Managerial ACCT = Cost ACCT.
You could take TESC's courses for Intermediate ACCT I + II, or you could do something else like LSU or Penn Foster (haven't done much research on Penn Foster, but think they may have an option).
For Advanced ACCT (and the Federal Income Taxation if you don't TECEP it), you can take the TESC course, or LSU also offers them as independent courses.
Oh, in addition to SL, LSU and TESC also offer the Cost Accounting class.

NOTE: With TESC, you won't have to worry about prerequisites. For LSU, you'll have to finish (I think it's) Cost ACCT before doing Intermediate ACCT I, and you'll have to finish that before II, and you'll have to finish II before Advanced ACCT.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Laura,

Welcome back! I looked into doing the undergraduate accounting certificate from TESC, but it has been a while, so there may be newer, better options than what I know. In this certificate, you can test out of Financial and Managerial Accounting (CLEP or DSST for Financial and the new TECEP for Managerial - TECEP Exams, or take Straighterline's courses if you prefer). Intermediate Accounting I and II would be courses; they can be taken at LSU (www.outreach.lsu.edu/CollegeCredit or LSU Online), or Columbia College (Columbia College), or other colleges (look into your local community college or university). Besides these, you would choose 6 accounting credits, which can include TECEP Federal Income Taxation, Cost Accounting (Straightlerline's Managerial Accounting, Columbia College, and others), or Advanced Accounting. Financial and Managerial Accounting and Federal Income Taxation are the only college level accounting exams that I know of.

A cost effective and fast plan would be:
CLEP/DSST/Straighterline Financial Accounting
TECEP/Straighterline Managerial Accounting
LSU Intermediate Accounting I & II
Straighterline Managerial/Cost Accounting
TECEP Federal Income Taxation

Hope this helps,
LaceyLady

Oh, I didn't see the replies before mine - they posted while I was typing mine :-)

The information in their posts is also good. I forgot about ECE and Penn Foster - which should also be good options.

Good luck!

Hey Elinor,

The only thing that can't be tested out of is "Advanced Accounting". That's the
only class that may slow you down, the rest of it could easily be completed
in 2-3 months.

Financial Accounting - Straighterline Accounting 1
Managerial Accounting - Straighterline Accounting 2
Intermediate Accounting 1 - Penn Foster
Intermediate Accounting 2 - Penn Foster
Cost Accounting - Straighterline Managerial Accounting
Federal Income Taxation - TECEP
Advanced Accounting - LSU or Adams online course

I have been finishing this cert up along with the CIS cert to add to my General
Management BSBA.

In my state (Oregon) the credits will work towards the CPA requirements, they
don't mind if they are "test out" credits here. Pretty good deal if you ask me!

I forgot about those TECEPs. Almost everything else in this thread is a repeat of what I already said.

You only have to have 18 credits (6 courses/exams), therefore you do not need to take Advanced Accounting.

That's correct.

I took an extra advanced accounting course to fulfill the CPA requirements for my state. If you're going to take the extra classes for a cert, you might as
well tack on one or two extra to go all the way.
