GPA = Letter Grade vs. Pass/Fail
#1
I was just wanting to confirm which companies transfer an actual letter grade to be figured in to my overall GPA, versus receiving just a pass/fail.

I went to college 20 years ago and did not do so well, hence, I would like to bump up my GPA and utilize every source possible before using a pass/fail source.

Please correct my list if I am wrong, and please let me know if I have forgotten any other type of exam for credit source.

TIA!!

Straighterline - Letter Grade
Aleks - Pass/Fail
Penn Foster - Letter Grade
CLEP - Pass/Fail
DSST - Pass/Fail
Saylor - ???

That's not exactly how things work. CLEP and DSST exam scores are sent to a school that awards semester hour credit. Most institutions treat CLEP and DSST as credit/no credit scores, not pass/fail. This is an important distinction. There is no penalty for not passing a CLEP or DSST. Notice that I didn't say failing a CLEP or DSST. If you fail a pass/fail course at a university, it adversely affects your GPA. If you don't pass a CLEP or DSST, it doesn't affect your GPA. You simply just don't receive credit for it. Usually a 50 on a CLEP or the midpoint on the old DSST two-digit scoring is a pass. But it could be higher or lower depending in the policies of the school you send your scores to.

Some schools award credit and a letter grade for CLEP and DSST exams. Your GPA at that school is affected by how well you scored on the exam.

No school will give a letter grade for TECEPs because they don't report your score on the transcript. I can never keep up with COSC and Excelsior's policies on awarding letter grades for Straighterline courses. I think one of them stopped awarding letter grades for them.

I believe COSC gives letter grades for DSSTs under the old grading system. If the passing score for the DSST is 400, then it is under the new system and no letter grade. If it is less than 400 (usually in the 40's), COSC gives a letter grade, so you want to do well on those exams. Im not sure how many exams are left that are still under the old system, but there aren't many if any.

See the following thread:

http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...aylor.html

Also,

Open up google and search the following:

COSC letter grade site:degreeforum.net

Make sure you verify with the school.

Please be sure to update us on what you find. Good luck.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

The only grades included in your GPA at COSC are the ones earned at COSC. The grades may show up on your transcript though as my SL grades are on my transcript, but CLEP is P or F.

ETA: I sent my grades straight from SL & CLEP to COSC, didn't use ACE.

Details on GPA are important. Are you saying that failing a CLEP results in an F on your transcript at COSC? Has anyone actually seen a failed CLEP exam show up as an F on a transcript?

That is why I gave the link which states that only classes taken at COSC count in your GPA. CLEPS are pass or fail, no grade. A "P" shows up on my transcript for A&I LIt. I have no idea if a failed CLEP would show up on a transcript as I have only taken one and passed it. Has anyone taken one, failed it and sent it to their college?

ETA: I guess a failed CLEP could show up on your transcript if you send it, but you have the option not to, wait and see if you pass and then pay to have it sent. Either way, it still isn't a letter grade and it isn't included in your GPA according to COSC.

I'm pretty sure COSC has been calculating my SL grades into my GPA. As well as classes I took previously at another university.
