"Washing" credits via Keiser?
#1
Hi all

I was told a story today that didn't check out to me and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what is going on here. My mom received a degree from a nationally accredited career college (Miller Motte) about 10 years ago. She would like to further her education at our local community college, but they will not accept those credits.

Today she told me she ran into a classmate's husband who claims that our local community college accepted her Miller Motte credits after she had them transferred through Keiser U. There seems to be something missing from this story because wouldn't the community college see that those credits originally xferred from Miller Motte? I talked to an admissions rep at Keiser and she says that the story doesn't sound right either.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks all!

She should followup with her classmate's husband, because that doesn't seem likely at all.

Perhaps she got an associates degree at Keiser. So, Keiser took NA credits and granted the degree. Then the next school allowed the block transfer to waive all GenEds.

Or that she basically did PLA through Keiser using MM coursework as proof.

Otherwise maybe someone accidentally processed her transcript wrong and didn't realize that the credits originally came from MM.

While I can't imagine someone's motivation for lying, you are right to be suspect. Laundering credits is almost never possible - believe me, people have been trying to work that problem here since before I landed in this community. Who wouldn't love a chance to get their college to take ACE or CLEP when they wouldn't otherwise? But, there are things a person can do to improve transfer- which doesn't really launder the credits, rather it finds a way in.

Keiser wouldn't be important in this process if it were legit - if what they are saying is true, than any regionally accredited 4 year uni would suffice. In other words, if they accept transfer, they accept transfer - period. The nuance here is to figure out what happened that confused the community college. It's *possible* that Keiser disguises transfer credit in some way that makes it look like original credit. Perhaps they don't indicate "transfer" on the transcript, perhaps they bring in the student's grade as opposed to just cr (which would be customary). If that is true, then the CC wouldn't notice that the courses were from somewhere else. Now, if that's true, that's a pretty big deal. That's news we can use over here Wink

I do not believe this would be a case of the student earning an AA and having an articulation agreement because articulation agreements go "up" from a community college into a 4-year degree, not "down" from a 4-year uni into a community college.

That said, there are RA colleges that will admit students with NA credit. Both my husband and I have NA associate's degrees and we've both turned them into RA Master's degree - we took different paths to make that happen, but it can happen. If your mom would like to return to college, share a little more about that and I'm sure we could help you work that problem with her. There is ALWAYS a way to get a legitimate degree - ALWAYS.
