Frankenstein
#1
Frankenstein was apparently drastically revised between its publication in 1818 and its republication in 1831, I think.  To the extent that the content can be considered different.  And FYI, Shmoop uses the 1831 version, while Straighterline uses the 1818 version.  I don't have the foggiest idea which version the printed copy is that we own, as it does't specify.  (I'm assuming the newer version, since it's newer and doesn't specify, but I don't really know.  As far as I can tell, the front matter offers no clarification.)

Just a heads-up that if you're enrolled in a course that uses this story, you might need to be fussy about where you get the text.

maybe 1818 version is about his life before he was reanimated
and the 1831 version is about his after he was reanimated

of course as far as I'm concerned this is the definitive version

This could be a very long post but I'll keep it short.
1818 was Shelley's original version of Frankenstein.
1831 was her revised edition. It is vastly different than her original.
She had a new outlook on life by the time she revised it. She lost several family members. Lost some friends. Was betrayed. Anyway, she started to believe more in destiny and things being out of people's control instead of everything happening due to choice and free will.
Second edition has more destiny type of things in it. A lot was changed.

I took this course couple of years ago via straighterline, and used the original without any issues at all.
