Field experience in Criminal Justice
#1
Just wondering if anyone has navigated the field experience requirement for the BA in Criminal Justice at UMPI.

The official wording is "Supervised field experience in a criminal justice or social service agency. Course can be taken for variable credit (3 or 6 hours) determined by hours completed at the field site. Course can be taken for 12 credit hours when student is completing full law enforcement academy training. Courses may be repeated for up to 18 credits."

Does this mean I have to a police academy or something to fulfill this requirement? That would be a bummer as I am in the military and can't exactly take 18-26 weeks off lol. Should I just start looking at a new school/degree?

That description is for the on campus program. You'll work with your advisor and professor on this. Don't sweat it. No police academy involved.

I would contact them (whoever here is listed as the YourPace contact), let them know you're active military and how would you meet this criteria.  I would be very supervised if active military duty wouldn't be able to somehow convert to meet this criteria (there are MPs afterall).

I'm hoping they could hook me up and consider my bootcamp "homeland security" haha. I suppose I'll reach out to someone at UMPI and see what can be done

Recent reply from Professor Leduc, who leads the capstone course:

"The good news is that our curriculum has a foundational philosophy of social justice which seems to be your interest.
The not so good news is that there is no substitution for the CRJ 496 course; but it is not necessarily connected to law enforcement.
This is the capstone course in the degree in which students work within a criminal or social justice agency and connect their experiences with our program learning outcomes. You may have somewhere local that you can intern with; or you may have relevant work experiences at your current job that you could use; or you may do it virtually with a social justice advocacy agency.
I meet (via zoom) with students in the session before they are ready to take this course and we plan out where you will complete your 100 hours."

She provided a syllabus, field hours log, and assessment instructions. Wouldn't hurt to reach out to see about your specific circumstances.

Thank you for sharing! I was hoping someone reached out to the professor and heard back. I have shared the contact info with a few people, but no had posted the what the response was. It does sound like this could be challenging for some and easy for others all depending on your current career status.

No problem; I also posted it on the UMPI Criminal Justice thread, in case people look there too.
