Maybe I missed a previous discussion on this, but it looks like they have expanded their competency based programs. I was scrolling through all of their online programs out of curiosity and noticed several that I hadn’t seen before including Human Resources and General Studies. The Winter Mini offers Texas Government which is one of those “extra classes” that some may need.

Not totally free since there’s a fifty buck application fee but still a really great find

I emailed advising asking if I could take one - and if so, could I take graduate classes without having to reapply to the grad school or was I just limited to undergrad offerings. They replied back "Unfortunately, this is not offered to the competency-based students."

To take advantage of the free class, you would need to formally apply for spring semester as an undergrad or graduate student; it doesn't matter if you choose degree seeking or not; admittance is faster with a non-degree seeking application. Some of the classes require you to be admitted into a specific program. A lot of the listed classes are core classes for undergrads and business classes. Once admitted to spring, you need to connect with a staff member to express interest in the free winter mini class.

More info on winter mini: https://www.tamuc.edu/mini

Get info about TAMUC's programs (choose something relevant to connect with a staff member): https://www.tamuc.edu/requestinformation
Are any of these available online? I can't tell.

At a quick glance, it looks like they are all online except for HIST 1302 US History Since 1865. To chat with someone in admissions/enrollment though, you can use this form, and just pick the most relevant options. This will probably send you some info automatically about whatever program you chose, but the real goal is to get an enrollment specialist to email you so you can respond back to the automated email with your questions about the winter mini class.

Yes! It doesn't matter if you took a free course in the past. You can take another free course. If it is over a year since you took classes, you may need to reapply. It's probably best to contact admission and ask. Use this form and just pick the most relevant option to get a hold of someone. You will want to decide whether you want a graduate level course or an undergraduate class before you apply. You can only be classified as an undergrad OR a grad student at one time, not both.

Interesting. The competency based programs do have different rules about their programs. That being said, you can, normally apply to and be enrolled in more than one program at a time. I am not 100% sure if this can co-occur with competency-based enrollment though, and it is because of the fee structures for those programs I think. I'm not 100% sure. Definitely chat with the registrar's office about co-enrollment in that program and taking a regular class on the side. You do have to be at the same level whether its undergrad or grad level.

I graduated in May and am not an active student but communicated with my advising contact through my student email. I went ahead and reapplied through the state application portal as a non degree seeking student. We'll see what happens

Looks like the exact dates (for those of you who were curious) are 12/16/24 - 1/10/25 https://inside.tamuc.edu/admissions/regi...20Date.pdf

Maybe a really stupid question - how do you know these are free?

I see the big bolded "FREE" now lol. Is there any more information on this than just this one page? Anyone have any experience with how thorough they are with needing all undergrad transcripts for grad courses? $50 application fee plus like 6 or 7 transcript fees is pretty serious.

Schedule of Classes for winter mini term: https://appsprod.tamuc.edu/Schedule/Sche...erm=202510

You'll want to ask Admissions about the transcripts for non-degree applicants. Also though....you may be able to apply, pay the fee, and be granted provisional admittance without all of those transcripts (not 100% sure). Provisional will usually grant you the ability to register for one term only until you submit the rest of your materials.

How did you get non-degree admissions? Spent the time to fill out the whole application just to see this:
