Professional Development Series (PDS)
The Professional Development Series includes seven Emergency Management Institute independent study courses that provide a well-rounded set of fundamentals for those in the emergency management profession. Many students build on this foundation to develop their careers.

Students who complete all the courses will receive a PDS Certificate of Completion. The courses, in recommended order of completion, are:

IS230 Principles of Emergency Management
IS235 Emergency Planning
IS242 Effective Communication
IS241 Decision Making and Problem Solving
IS240 Leadership and Influence
IS244 Developing and Managing Volunteers
IS139 Exercise Design

Question:

Are all of the FEMA courses on their website eligible for transcripting at TESC? I need 17 credits, so I sent them this email:

Hi,
>I plan on taking some FEMA independent study courses very soon. I've heard that Thomas
Edison will allow students to bank the credits on a TESC transcript using the credit bank
service. I was wondering if you could give me a list of the courses that have been
evaluated at TESC for this service? Here is the link to the courses I am referring to:
>
>http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/crslist.asp
>
>Thank you for your time.

and got this response:

Credit Banking is a service available to individuals who wish to consolidate college-level
work documented elsewhere into a Thomas Edison State College transcript. Credits placed on
a transcript through this program are not evaluated. At this point in the process you may
find it beneficial to speak directly with an Admissions Counselor for guidance.

Does that mean they are all eligible? Maybe I should call them.

No...not all the FEMA courses are eligible for college credit, but most are - provided you got to TESC or Excelsior (or go the pricey Frederick Community College route).

Michael Gates and a few others over at degreeinfo.com have successfully gotten credit for these (I think ~40 with most being lower level electives).

e.g.

Hope this helps.

I guess I'll wait and ask my advisor at Excelsior if they could tell me which courses have been accepted in the past. Good to know I can get so many, though.Big Grin

I was planning on using them for lower level applied professional elective credits. I was under the impression that that was the only way they trasferred to Excelsior? Would be nice to get upper level or arts and science credit, though.

It is amazing how much discussion has been had over the fact that I sent my FEMA and USFA transcripts to Thomas Edison State College and got 39 credits for the FEMA Independent Study Courses and 3 credits for Fire Academy Independent Study Courses for a total of $250 using the TESC Credit Bank and military discount which gives a lower cost and unlimited credits, and then got Excelsior to transfer all of these to my Excelsior transcript at no additional cost. Wait till you see what I do next. No hints.

I sat on 32 FEMA credits for about two years before sending them into Excelsior via Frederick CC. The result was that all my lower level applied professional credits were satisfied! Excelsior took all the FEMA courses and gave me credit, and a big chunk of my degree program was satisfied. It cost me about the same as a couple of Excelsior classes would, and I racked up 32credits.

Ditto... I've been watching this thread since it started and can't believe the amount of discussion. Which is good especially when it comes to a new way to earn (free) credits.

I took seven FEMA courses 12 years ago when I was on active duty and thought I did well at that time when I paid $30 a course to get them official accepted at Lewis & Clark Community College. And now I just had to take four more because of a military requirement and will probably complete the Professional Development Series. To bad I only need upper level courses for Excelsior. However, I might be able to use them for my A.S. in Public Safety Management.

How do I apply for Fema im not really following the instructions?
Is there an online enrollment and just add my info and click away?
it says something about sponsoring agency and then NETC approval??
i am on active duty right now as well..??

please can someone reply to me, i want to take full advantage of this.
I do not have any association with FEMA right now so in order to take the courses do i just download the materials and then submit the final exam with no know association with this institute?
